The NICC AI Alliance is a cross-functional committee of faculty and staff dedicated to guiding the ethical integration of artificial intelligence across the institution. The Alliance established comprehensive guidelines to ensure AI standards are applied consistently and transparently throughout the college.
For questions, support, or to share feedback, faculty can contact the Alliance at AI@nicc.edu. Browse Alliance initiatives in the AI Alliance Portfolio, and view our web presence on nicc.edu
Faculty are expected to be upfront with students regarding how AI will be used in their courses and what the specific expectations are for student AI usage (See Policies & Academic Integrity section below). Clear communication helps protect the integrity of the learning experience while providing a structured environment for responsible AI application. It is considered effective practice to cite AI usage in your work. If you utilize AI tools to enhance your course materials, consider citing the tool that was used or other applicable information. Reference the College’s AI Guidelines when utilizing AI in your work.
For work tasks, all NICC employees should use the College’s Approved AI Tools. This ensures data privacy and security measures are met by the vendors. Any tool used outside of this umbrella should not be used if College data is transferred to them.
To help communicate these expectations clearly and consistently, NICC utilizes a traffic light framework for activities and assessments:
🔴 RED: AI use is not permitted on this activity.
🟡 YELLOW: AI use is permitted on certain elements of this activity, as described in the instructions.
🟢 GREEN: AI is fully integrated into the activity.
Faculty can review the full framework here for implementation guidance.
The College maintains standards for academic honesty. The Academic Integrity Policy explicitly prohibits the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence. All faculty are encouraged to reference this policy in their syllabi to ensure students understand the consequences of unauthorized AI usage.
The College has established AI Guidelines, which contain examples for effective practices and guidelines for responsible use. The guidelines are reviewed yearly by the AI Alliance team, with any changes going to Cabinet for approval.
The Department of Instructional Innovation and Design (DIID) provides resources to help faculty leverage AI to enhance teaching and to save time:
AI-Assisted Tools: DIID supports the use of the College’s AI tools within Brightspace to help with accessible course design, quiz questions, assignments, and discussions.
Course Design: Instructional designers are available to help faculty integrate AI tools into their Quality Course Design process.
