SumHIPPOS is an assignment that has you practice using evidence from within a source and then providing extended analysis beyond the document. It is important to check the source information to access potential prior knowledge and to understand more about the document as part of a larger topic/era.
Sum = Summary
Appropriately reference the article by name and author
Summarize the major points of the article.
H = Historical Situation
Identify and explain what is happening at the time of the document to help place the document in its proper context. This leads to explaining the significance or the impact of the document on the overall event or topic.
I = Intended Audience
Identify and explain who was the intended audience for the document. The answer will be a specific group and will include the expected outcome of sharing it with that group.
P = Purpose
Identify and explain the purpose of the document
P = Point of View/Perspective
Identify and explain the author's perspective on the topic or situation.
O = Outside Evidence
Identify and incorporate (explain) at least one piece of outside evidence that IS LINKED to the document to strengthen your focus on significance and attempts at document as support and sourcing (extended analysis).
Identify and develop with explanation at least one piece of outside evidence that IS NOT LINKED in any way to the document. Explore similar examples (people, events, situations) or counter perspectives regarding the topic. This section is significant in expanding the discussion beyond one source which is why it cannot be linked to the document. This is your possibility for the Evidence Beyond the Document which will be multi-sentences [in an essay] developing the outside evidence NOT LINKED to the document. This will go at the beginning of the paragraph to lead into the document/s use OR at the end of the paragraph to discuss correlations and lead to the reconnection of the paragraph to the thesis thus providing purposeful closure to the paragraph.
S = Significance
Explain the "so what?" of the document. Why and how is it significant to your argument (claim) which is answering the topic essential question.
Depending on the specific activity, you will do one of the following:
Create a Google doc or slidedeck to complete the SumHIPPOS as an individual or in a collaborative team.
Post your response to Google Classroom . This version may include posting posting/receiving responses from your peers.
You are encouraged to type your response for these SumHIPPOS activities so you can easily reference them later. If the response will be posted to Google Classroom, it is always a good idea to have a backup copy. in a separate document and then copy/paste your response into the appropriate assignment. This will ensure you have a backup copy of your work for other uses such as including it in your Topic Reflections or future written responses and can check your work before posting to confirm you wrote a college-level response with proper writing conventions.
If you are asked to post your SumHIPPOS to our Google Classroom and then respond to your colleagues, please complete the following three steps:
Appreciate your colleague for taking a risk and sharing a contribution with everyone.
Identify and explain at least one major takeaway from the abstract and the topic. Be specific about something that you learned.
Identify the key concept/s (not the Topic since that was done with the abstract) to which the article can be aligned.
