We have a half day today and a three day weekend! Happy MLK day!!
Dear Adams' Fam!!
😍 Pop Quiz - what is Arizona's State Test to measure students' acquisition of the standards called???? Were you able to answer without looking up the answer? Don't feel bad if you were not able to, it's been changing almost annually for a few years now and Hollie, Renee and myself were having this discussion a little over a week ago and none of us knew off the top of our heads! It is the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment or AASA for short. I know it is hard to make gains when we keep changing the instrument to measure those gains BUT I also know we are doing MANY awesome things here at Adams that will be evident, eventually in our students' growth. When I was in the classroom, it definitely helped when I as the teacher had a solid understanding of how students were being tested so I could help them navigate the assessment so since none of us have seen the AASA, I highly suggest you take a look at the ADE Assessment Page to see what you can garner from that to help support your students so we can prove how much learning has occurred this school year at Adams!

Counselor Corner
Thank you to all teachers who helped their kids take their mySAEBRS. We met with over 100 students based on their answers and have found many to help as a result of our conversations with them. So far, we have referred 8 students to therapy, a couple students we want to see individually, and more than 30 students that will benefit from being in a counseling group!
We will be starting lots of groups in January. Be on the lookout for Tardy groups, friendship/self-esteem groups, and grief groups (this would include students missing parents in prison or just because they don't get to see a parent).
Have an amazing Winter break and get lots of rest and relaxation!!!!
And Special Visits
On Tuesday! Lara Ellington one of our School Board members is visiting from 9-10. I don't know if she would like to tour any classrooms, this will be my first time meeting her so I'm not sure how she would like to structure her visit. I'll let you know as soon as I do!
New Fiesta Buzz Bus Route! Lupita and I spoke to the Transit Coordinator for the city of Mesa and they are planning to develop a new Buzz Bus Route for our community that would take them for free to areas like Riverview and the grocery store and run from 5 in the morning till 9 at night. In different neighborhoods where routes like this exist their data shows that it really helps the community with getting to and from work as well as their jobs. I'm excited about how this will help our Adams community! We did make sure they bus stops would not be directly next to the school for safety sake:)
Our January AVID Strategy of the month is Socratic Methods
To the right here ➡I have included a link to a google folder that I made that has some helpful resources about Socratic Methods. If you google Socratic Seminar or Philosophical Chairs you'll also find many great resources. One of the best resources is also to log onto MyAVID.org - each of you has an account, if you need help with accessing that Renee Geyer can help you. Once in My AVID go to Core Strategies you'll find different strategies and the resources in the "Learn More" buttons.
Once again thank you to all of the people who have helped to cover all of our open spots this week - it's been A LOT and your help has been immensely appreciated!!!!
More on Warm Demanders - The chart here explains 4 different types of teachers with the ultimate goal to be in the upper left hand quadrant as a warm demander - someone who has wonderful rapport with students coupled with high expectations for students' abilities to learn and achieve. A mistake that gets made all too often with students is feeling sorry for them and then not expecting much of them thinking we are doing them a favor - this is not a favor, it's a disservice.
Did I share this one already? Still funny though!
