Water Main Break Leaves Important Intersection Shut Down
On February 17th at 11 a.m., a water main burst at the intersection of 16th St. NW and 4th Ave NW in Minot, North Dakota.
The break was repaired after crews dug for sixteen hours through nearly six feet of ice before they were able to reach the break and restore the water flow at midnight. The buildings affected were the Total Transformation Clinic, as well as the local Loaf ‘N Jug, and two homes.
On the City of Minot’s Facebook page, they shared some of the struggles to repair this break. As stated by the City Officials, “It’s been a challenge to negotiate around all the other infrastructure in this intersection (gas line, storm sewer, etc). Not to mention the big rocks and other stuff that we have to remove before we can fix the actual water break.”
The Utilities Director of the City of Minot, Jason Sorenson, says these breaks are becoming more common as the water pipes age as well as being more heavily affected by the cold weather.
