Coming back to MSU summer theatre for its 60th season is a dramedy sensation, fun for all ages to enjoy.
"One Strange Night" by Bradley Dokken is a hilarious telling of a night that just won’t go right. James and Lorie are welcoming Lorie’s mother for a visit and are determined for everything to go flawlessly. However, things take a drastic turn for the worst due to events such as neighborly calls to law enforcement and many random door slammings.
When asked about inspiration for this piece Dokken spoke about his own experience as an actor, wanting actors to enjoy the play along with the audience. He explains that as an “observer of human nature”, he observes things that others see as funny and makes a note of them.
Dokken’s play serves as a comfort to people having a hard time, to let them witness a humorous disaster that overshadows whatever is bothering them. Dokken advises that “when things snowball [then] just keep going.” His characters showcase this resilience through their chaotic events.
For this next run of the show on MSU’s summer stage, (the last time being July of 2018), Dokken hopes to see some new twists to the staging and different highlighting and/or emphasis on new lines as different actors take on the roles. His biggest hope is “[For] people to have a night where they can come and laugh.”
Dokken encourages everyone to become a part of the experience whether as an audience member or as a part of the cast. When he wrote the play, he did so that parts can be played by anyone and everyone, those seeking to audition should “never say never” and put themselves out there to join the fun.
Stop by MSU’s summer theatre venue July 8-13th if you’re up for the good laugh and enjoyable drama “One Strange Night” will bring, and consider auditioning, submissions are open till March 21st.
