Welcome to Minot North’s first Newspaper site! As a part of Ms. Michels’s journalism class, we will curate a collection of pieces every week to keep you updated and informed. So much is happening in the school, and we want the student body to be in the know every week with content such as recent sports games, clubs, special events, holidays, etc. will be published. The journalism team is a mix of students in different grades with different backgrounds writing on various topics. Each are involved in many activities around the school and community. You will find bios for each writer, editor, and publisher under the “Our Team” tab. Check the site weekly for updates within our school and around the community!

Isabella Berntsen

Isabella (Bella) Berntsen is a MNHS senior who, when not in school, spends her time shopping, tanning, and spending time with friends, family, and puppies. When asked what she enjoys the most about MNHS, she says "I love the community." Her positive attitude shows in all of her classes and, as the first graduating class, she takes the opportunity to set an example.

When working on school work, Bella enjoys listening to Zach Bryan, SZA, Justin Bieber, and One Direction. Once she graduates, she plans to attend Minot State University and majoring in Elementary Education having already started college courses this year as a senior.

When asked what award she would most likely win, she responded with, "Spending the most money!" Best of luck to Bella as she moves onto her next chapter!

Mr. Byron Borgen

Mr.Borgen is a Technology and Engineering Instructor. He enjoys working with young people because he strives to help be better humans for the future. He says that, "favorite thing is when a student that was absolutely struggling in school comes back and tells me that I helped them through a hard time." Clearly, his passion for teaching carries to his other students. Mr. Borgen did not always teach. He left teaching for a time and spent time being self-employed and running a museum, but after adopting his kids, he realized that "my calling in life was to teach" and he has not looked back.

Aside from teaching, Mr. Borgen advises the Technology Student Association and coaches The FIRST robotics team here in Minot. Furthermore, he also sponsors the Youth For Christ Meetings. When asked about the new high school, he said "I love MNHS. it is amazing, I especially like the students there." His only wish is that our shop areas were bigger.

When not in school, you can him, while no longer hunting and fishing as much, his hobbies have shifted to collecting old toys like Gi-Joes, Star Wars, Legos and Die cast. He jams out to everything from Metallica to Phantom of the Opera. "My favorite bands are Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Gorillaz." MNHS is happy to have a dedicated teacher working for us who truly loves kids!

Kyleigh Keller

Kyleigh Kellar is finishing up her senior year at Minot North High School. During her time in school Kyleigh participated in multiple clubs that interest her such as HOSA, NHS and GSA. Additionally, Kyleigh is an active member of North’s volleyball team. To pass the time, Kyligh likes reading, volleyball, videogames and listening to alternative music, her favorite artist being The Front Bottoms.

Looking forward to the future, Kyleigh will be joining the Army National Guard then returning to Minot State to study biology. To wrap up her year, Kyliegh has enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of Minot North! If she could win an award it would be for “Being Herself”

Mr. David Gipson

Mr. Gipson is a paraprofessional at Minot North. For Gipson, becoming a paraprofessional wasn't his intended job outside of highschool. However, influenced by those around him he decided to apply for the position, he explained, “I used to be a blue collar guy up until 2021. I caught Covid and spent 3 months in the hospital here. It almost killed me but thankfully I ended up disabled. I meandered around for a couple of years until the wonderful people at Dakota Vocational Rehab suggested that I apply for a para job and tada! Here I am.” One of Gipsion’s favorite things about his job is the positive impact he makes on students' lives.

Outside of school, Gipson enjoys collecting legos, along with curating community events! Furthermore, he enjoys spending time with his kid, dog and cat. If he could win an award for anything it would be ‘not cursing at school’ saying, “That’s hard for an oil field guy”. MNHS is proud to have devoted para’s in the school who genuinely cares about the kids they serve, Minot North shines a little brighter with staff like Mr. Gipson.

AlandyAnna Forman

This week’s student spotlight is AlandyAnna Forman(Cables)!

AlandyAnna is a junior here at Minot North. As a part of the Minot North’s yearbook committee, she thoroughly enjoys creating a product that her peers will likely keep until their old. AlandyAnna loves attending MNHS and getting to see everybody else enjoying the school as well. She loves that there is one big hallway, but would certainly change the No Travel Tuesday policy.

After high school, AlandyAnna plans to pursue a career in Forensics. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, cooking, and coffee shop-vibed music, finding them pleasant activities to let her mind relax.

Lastly, if she were to win an award for anything, it would have to be in relation to forensic discovery.

Ms. Kim Hassel

This week’s staff spotlight is Kim Hassel!

Ms. Hassle is a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing(TODHH). At the start of her career, she originally went to school to become an interpreter for the Deaf, but was taken a different direction. Years later, she worked as a para for the Minot District and jumped to take the opportunity to participate in the Para to Teacher Program when it was offered to her. She was then able to finish her degree and find herself where she is now!

While not currently helping advise a club here at North, she hopes to eventually accommodate Sentinel Stitches within her schedule. Still, she loves teaching within the positive atmosphere at MNHS. Though she encourages students to learn to use more safety precautions with the open campus and show more school spirit.

Outside of teaching, she enjoys crocheting, reading, cooking, gardening, crafting, and sewing. She likes to listen to country and 80s music. You can find her this summer enjoying the sun and warm weather or working in her garden. Lastly, if she were to win an award, she would take home a State Fair blue ribbon for one of her crochet pieces.

Abigail Hoffer

Our student spotlight this week is Abigail Hoffer!

Abigail Hoffer is a sophomore here at Minot North, she competes in Competitive Speech and is a part of the Student Congress, FBLA, NHS, and Student Council. She loves it here at MHNS, her highlight of the school being the students and the teachers that help her strive to do her best, and she hopes more students to be more engaged with the community around them. After highschool, she plans to go to college at ASU West.

Outside of school Abigail likes to watch documentaries, read, and do homework in her free time. Her favorite music genres are 2010s pop and alternative rock. Lastly, if she were to win any award, she’d win the Yapperest Yapper in all the Yappers.

Mrs. Kara Del Rio

Our staff highlight for the week is Mrs. Del Rio!

Mrs. Del Rio is a language arts teacher and an adult supervisor for Sources of Strength here at Minot North. She has always been passionate about reading and writing and found that she could share her passion as a teacher and felt inspired to make a difference in the educational field and be better for her students. She sees her students as the highlight of her job, saying “They keep every day interesting and never stop making me laugh. I love that each day is different and there is always something new to learn.” She's also expressed how lucky she feels to work with her colleagues who always make her smile.

Some of her hobbies outside of school include reading, camping, birdwatching, weight lifting, hiking, and cooking/baking. She loves country and pop music and anything else that she likes to sing to. This summer she hopes to go camping with her husband as much as possible and to visit her home state, Connecticut, and see her family there.

Mrs. Del Rio loves being a part of MNHS, saying “I feel like we are building an energetic and inviting culture, and I am so proud to be a teacher here.” Her love for the school is reflected in the fact that she owns so many sentinel shirts that she could win the “Most Sentinel Shirt Award.”

Kenleigh Monley

Kenleigh has a passion for the arts! Whether it's singing, acting or speech, or interaction with her community. She's an active participant in theater, where she can transform into different characters, and loves being part of a supportive group of people. Kenleigh also participates in NHS because helping people brings her joy, and Vox Voce, where she enjoys a cappella songs. She's a fan of speech as well, where she gets to perform scripts and make people laugh. Kenleigh also participates in student council. When it comes to music Kenleigh loves it all! Her favorite genres are Indie and Pop. After high school, she has plans to become a therapist! Kenleigh enjoys many things about MNHS, especially the new facilities, the supportive teachers, and the fun spirit seen in events like dress-up days. However, she’d love to see vending machines and more comfortable chairs in the library. And if she could win an award for anything? Kenleigh would love to be recognized for her psychic abilities!

Mr. Joe Super

Mr. Super’s passion for teaching comes from his love of watching students grow and succeed. When he's not in the classroom, he’s enjoying his hobbies of birding and curling. He also coaches Envirothon and Science Bowl, helping students deepen their scientific knowledge while building teamwork skills.

When it comes to music, Mr. Super enjoys Classic Rock and often listens to National Public Radio for a mix of news and relaxation. This summer, he’s planning to take some time to relax and spend quality moments with his parents in Montana.

One of Mr. Super’s favorite things about MNHS is his classroom, Room 249, thanks to the great natural light it gets. However, he wishes the Band Room weren’t quite so far away! If Mr. Super could win an award for anything, it would be for winning a Curling Bonspiel, an event he’s passionate about.

Kenya Graham

This week’s student spotlight is senior Kenya Graham! Along with being a student, Kenya participates in the school’s Symphonic Choir. When she is not busy with school and work, she enjoys crocheting, reading, and camping when the weather is suitable for such. Kenya frequently listens to pop artists Sam Smith and Adele. Once she is done with her high school career, she is on track to move to Utah to go to school for diesel mechanics. While Kenya likes the spacious parking lot, she dislikes the schools’ focus on being very separate from one another. If she were to win an award for anything, it would be for her punctuality!

Ms. Shannon Krueger

Our staff spotlight for the week is Ms. Shannon Krueger, one of Minot North’s very own counselors! When not working hard throughout the school, you can find her getting involved in local activism throughout our community and listening to indie rock. She also helps advise the GSA club. Ms. Krueger started her career as a high school teacher and fell in love with helping her students, but found that as a counselor, she could help them in many more ways. What she loves most about Minot North is the amazing team. From the teachers to the custodians to the counselors, everyone comes together to help their students however they can. If she were to win an award for anything, it would have to be for “being late to everything.

Levi McCormick

Our student spotlight lights up for a very amazing student: Levi McCormick! Levi is a sophomore here at Minot North, but when he isn't at school he enjoys studying, going on walks, eating Mcdonalds, listening to Phoebe Bridgers or Zach Bryan, and cooking. Levi is apart of North's art club and he works at Perkett for before and after CLC. He loves "being around kids and making their day better" and being able to "enjoy relaxing while creating things". Levi appreciates his time here as a Minot North student, stating that he "love[s] the staff at MNHS and the new building!" After high school, Levi has a plan to become a real estate agent through studying business and economics at UND. If he could be awarded anything, Levi would be honored to have his name featured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day.

Ms. Shannon Murphy

The staff spotlight shifts to highlight Shannon Murphy this week! Ms. Murphy is an Administrative Assistant in our very own Minot North Main Office! When she's not hard at work managing the office, Ms. Murphy enjoys to help those with tight financial budgets, as well as camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and just adventuring in general, especially with family and traveling to both national and international places. Ms. Murphy originally grew interest in working at a school when a friend asked her to sub at their school, to which afterwards she comments "While there, I discovered I really enjoyed the environment. Being around young minds and watching them mature through the years is really rewarding." Ms. Murphy's sense of school spirit is like no other. She takes great pride in the students and staff of North, and even manages the concessions stand during games! One of her favorite parts of her job in the office is seeing students come in with fresh ideas of ways to improve our school. While Miss Murphy doesn't particularly enjoy public recognition, everyone would agree with her sentiment of being a "jack of all trades" due to her many talents and activities that show her dedication to both the school and the important things in her life.

Daniela Emerick

This week's student spotlight is on freshman Daniela Emerick. Daniela is actively involved in Spanish Club and participates in Track. She enjoys Spanish Club because it allows her to meet new people and build friendships, while Track gives her the opportunity to improve her fitness and connect with others who share similar interests. Daniela shared that if she were to win an award it would be for helping people out. In addition to her school activities, she loves running and drawing in her free time. This summer, she plans to continue running and walking while spending quality time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Amy Larson

For our staff spotlight, Amy Larson is stepping into the light. She is our school’s sunniest FACS teacher and has always had a passion for teaching, with a special love for building relationships with students. She says, “What I love most about my job is that it’s never the same! I get to build relationships with students and then see them out in the community, whether they’re working or hanging out with friends. I love teaching their siblings too because I can share funny stories about them!” One of Mrs. Larson’s favorite classes to teach is sewing, where she gets to witness students transform from not knowing how to thread a machine to designing their own clothing. It’s a rewarding experience to see their growth! Outside of school, Mrs. Larson enjoys reading, sewing, crocheting, laughing, watching movies, and traveling. She’s also an active member of the FCCLA and The Sentinel Stitches Club. If there were an award for Mrs. Larson, she would definitely win for "Wearing a lot of PINK, making viral TikToks, and smiling too much!" She is a bright, dedicated teacher who loves what she does and shares that joy with everyone around her.

Ryleigh McMillan

As Junior at Minot North Ryleigh, and a proud member of the Class of 2026. She enjoys crocheting, being creative, and reading in her spare time. Furthermore, Ryleigh is an active participant in school spirit here at MNHS. She serves the school on the Junior Student Council. Ryleigh gives insight on why she decided to join StuCo, “I participate in Student council because I want to be more active in the school community and help with school activities.” Her clear dedication to serve her peers is admirable. Additionally, Ryleigh is an extremely talented individual when it comes to crocheting, and is an active member of the Sentinel Stitches club. Sentinel Stitches help students learn how to crochet and garners a community of fiber welding experts (Master Crocheters). In fact, if Ryleigh could win an award for anything, it would be “most creative”, It’s easy to understand why as Ryleigh is an expert at anything crafty and creative. After high school, Ryliegh wants to pursue a degree in business and open her very own bookstore cafe!

Senora Charlene Sabin

For our staff spotlight, Senora Sabin is showing us the world of science. Senora Sabin hangs out in room 244. She chose to become a teacher because, while she likes science, she does not like hospitals and teaching became the route to take. As Minot North is new this year, she says that what she loves the most about the school are her windows (she came from Minot High) and the super long hallway. When asked what she loves most about teaching, she replied, "Watching students struggle through a lab as they apply their newly gained knowledge." When not dazzling students with her science skills, Sabin spends her time knitting, gardening, reading in her hammock, and soaking up the sunshine. Her current music trend is Colombian Rock. And when asked what award she should be given, Sabin replied, one for "baking cheesecake."

Ashley Carr

This week's student spotlight is shined upon a sophomore, Ashley Carr. Ashley is in the science olympiad, student council, cheer, and honor society. She is also the state vice president and the chapter president of TSA. Ashley's career goal is to become an engineer. She cheers on the Minot North Cheer team and said one of her greatest accomplishments is winning first place in the triple threat division at one of her competitions, the Best of the Midwest. Her favorite subject is science, which she said she likes because “You learn something new every day,” and that it’s fun. Speaking of fun, Ashley also said that she likes to hang out with her sisters and just have fun with them.

Miss Lenora Watson

For our staff spotlight, Miss. Watson is stepping into the light. Miss. Watson is a language arts teacher in room 219. She has always wanted to become a teacher. She says that she can’t remember the exact age she decided to become a teacher, but she has since she was at least a freshman. She teaches high school since she has been coaching for years. What she loves about this job is, “student relationships, that is the best part of the job. Getting to know all of you guys. getting to know about your lives, getting to know who you guys are, that’s the best part.” Miss. Watson's career goals are to figure out how to keep teaching while moving, being better at teaching, and overall continuing to improve. Her biggest accomplishment she said is, “ I think there's a lot of different accomplishments, but I don't know how to like measure which ones are the best.” Overall she states, “Graduating from college is a big one. Getting this job is a big one, as like my first teaching job. But then like, I played 4 years of softball so my senior day was a big accomplishment.” But what is she like outside of school? While outside of school she does yoga, reading, book club, and hanging out with her dog and friends.

Life on the Minot North High School Campus

Life here for the students and faculty is both rich and invigorating. Surrounded with a supporting community of not only the faculty and student body, but also parents of students and school supporters. Students say they feel a sense of belonging within the school’s community and that it offers a home away from home, where they feel most comfortable for pursuing future interests and goals. Providing a new setting for students and amazing opportunities for everyone attending the school.

Students have said that they enjoy the new atmosphere and have liked their experience here so far. They say teachers are helpful and friendly and thank the faculty for maintaining the school. They’ve agreed that they enjoy the weekly events, such as sporting events,

Life on campus is cozy and students feel comfortable within the school and going about their daily activities. While some harbor complaints, they still find even the smallest things they do enjoy about the new school. Enjoying school events, new student facilities, and the vending machines.

Despite the challenges that the new school campus faces, the students and faculty have each found things that they enjoy. From little things to bigger, everyone finds a comfortable place within the Minot North High school campus.
