Sometimes you just need a break.
This is why I put so much attention on my spring break trip. Not only did I need a break from the busyness of my life, but I was going to New York City, a place that always felt like a dream versus reality. My dream vacation.
Sadly, my trip didn’t start off with a bang. After many hours of waiting at the airport, our flight seemed like it was never going to make it out of Minot. It was very discouraging, as this was THE trip to me, and felt like my only chance to see the city before I graduate and become an adult. To my relief, everything finally worked out and I still got to spend four days in the city before heading back to Minot.

As soon as we touched down in NYC, I could tell it was a thrilling place to be. The people were coming from all over the world, the taxi drivers drove in a way that would never fly back home, and the amount of pedestrians (especially those that J-walk) were enough to overwhelm my small city brain. Everywhere I turned there were landmarks I had only seen on TV (The Chrysler Building, Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, etc.) and I knew then and there that I never wanted to leave.

My favorite part of my trip to the Big Apple is hands down the Broadway show experience. While in the city I had the opportunity to see 5 Broadway shows: &Juliet, Wicked, Hamilton, Hadestown, and Six. The moment I sat down in the theater for the first time, I was blown away. The sound, beautiful singing, gorgeous costumes, and incredible set were thrown at me all at once at high speed, and it was amazing. During Hadestown my jaw dropped for a solid five minutes at the sheer talent and quality of all of the elements.
An unpopular opinion of mine is on New York City food, specifically the NY styled pizza. It was great, but it wasn’t jaw droppingly different and fantastic, and tasted to me like an elevated Spicy Pie (my parents weren’t amused by my comparison). Other than pizza, I was able to try oysters for the first time, which I actually didn’t mind. It was exciting to be in a new city trying new things in the first place.
Through my time in NYC, though short lived, I feel as though I’ve grown as a person. I got to experience many firsts in my experiences with food and theatre, and I also had opportunities to visit museums (The Metropolitan Art Museum and the 9/11 Memorial Museum) that sparked in depth thinking. Although I just left, I can’t wait to go back and visit New York again.
