February 20-22, Minot High presented their straight show of the year: She Kills Monsters. She Kills Monsters is the story of a sister, Agnes, portrayed by Xylia Michels, grieving the death of her sister, Tilly, portrayed by Ollie Hoffer-Grey. By traveling the DnD journal of her sister, Agnes struggles as she yearns to learn more about her sister.
Behind the scenes, many hands were needed to assemble this dramedy. While the actors must do their part in the show, the tech crews put the show together. From the costumes the actors wear to the props used to the choreography, the show would not have been a show without these important crews members.
Kenleigh Monley, a Minot North cheerleader, was asked to choreograph a cheerleader dance battle. She describes the experience as “super fun.” The cast worked hard with the choreography they were given and even “added their own bits here and there, it really made the dance their own.” The cast and director were really appreciative and welcoming.
Emily Taylor, a professional costumer, was hired to tailor and upgrade their costumes. From the elaborately designed cardboard masks to the struggles of communication. Layla Port, a student at Minot High, reports that working with a professional costumer was fun, but a lack of communication was a huge roadblock and made the job much more complicated for many involved. Eventually, the department was able to overcome the issue of lack of communication and create cohesive and creative costumes for the cast.
Cassia Pfau, the props department head and coordinator of the slideshow, put in lots of effort to make sure the details and objects used were perfect. She states that many challenges occurred along the road but were easily overcome. The dragon was a different story, though. Cassia states that “from having to figure out dimensions, colors, and how to put it all together, it really tested my abilities.” The toughest challenge throughout the show is “making sure the actors put them away in the correct spots.” Cassia’s work made the actors’ actions and handling more fluent.
Other areas of tech( such as stage managers, light and sound crew, fight scene choreographer, etc.) that were not mentioned in detail also worked together to bring this show to life. Without them, there would have been no show.
