This week’s Club of the Week is Sources of Strength. Sources of Strength is ran by Mrs. Byer, a language arts teacher here at North. She has been teaching for 10 years. Sources of Stength consists of 3 advisors and 35 members, but they are open to more members. They meet the third Wednesday of each month. Mrs. Byers explains, “We are a youth suicide prevention project designed to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying, and substance abuse. With this in mind, our school focuses on one of the eight pillars every month: family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, physical health, and mental health. Each month, we host a school-wide event to promote, enhance, and discuss the positive aspects of each pillar. We attempt to have a diverse group of peer leaders who positively impact a wide range of cliques within the school and community.” They make sure there is a safe space for everyone. Sources of Strength was created from a district initiative to help build a positive culture and have students focus on the positives of life.
