AEA 9 Intro to ACE Foundational
Course Outline
Semester / Year Long Course
This is 17 weeks of an 18 week semester. I left 1 week as “Padding”
Unit 2: Job Site Safety Procedures & the Miter Saw (2 Weeks)
Students will be introduced to basic principles and procedures for working safely in and around others on a work site. Instruction will focus on proper PPE and general safety procedures.
Standard 5.1 Student should be able to explain the idea of a safety culture and its importance in the construction crafts.Standard 5.2 Student should be able to identify causes of accidents and the impact of accident costs.Standard 5.3 Student should be able to explain the role of OSHA in job-site safety.Standard 5.5 Student should be able to recognize hazard and risk assessment techniques.Standard 5.9 Student should be able to define safe work procedures to use around electrical hazards.Standard 5.10 Student should be able to demonstrate the use and care of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).Standard 5.11 Student should be able to explain the importance of hazard communications (HazCom) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).Standard 5.12 Student should be able to identify other construction hazards on your job site, including hazardous material exposures, environmental elements, welding and cutting hazards, confined spaces, and fires.Standard 5.13 Student should be able to inspect workplaces for safe working environment and report unsafe conditions.Standard 5.15 Student should be able to clean and maintain work area and leave in safe condition.Standard 5.16 Student should be able to follow tool checkout and maintenance procedures.Unit 3: Building Materials & Fasteners/Adhesives (1 Week)
Provides an overview of the building materials used in construction work, including lumber, sheet materials, engineered wood products, concrete, and structural steel.
Introduces students to nails, screws, and various construction related adhesives. Instruction will also focus on the proper use and operation of hand and power fastening devices.
Standard 12.3 Student should be able to use proper materials-handling techniques.Standard 12.5 Student should be able to recognize hazards and follow safety procedures required for materials handling.Unit 4: Print Reading and Estimation (2 Weeks)
The unit introduces students to the interpretation of various construction prints and the estimation of building materials. Students estimate the amount of material and total cost of materials.
Standard 10.1 Student should be able to recognize and identify basic construction drawing terms, components, and symbols.Standard 10.4 Student should be able to interpret and use drawing dimensions.Unit 5: Project Fabrication and Tool Safety (10 Weeks)
Hand and Power Tool Safety
Students will be introduced to the basic principles and procedures for operating common power tools found in the lab and on the jobsite including the miter saw, circular saw, and table saw.
Standard 8.1 Student should be able to demonstrate the ability to use the proper hand tool for the application / process.Standard 8.2 Student should be able to visually inspect hand tools to determine if they are safe to use.Standard 8.3 Student should be able to safely use hand tools.Standard 9.1 Student should be able to demonstrate the ability to use the proper power tool for the application / process.Standard 9.2 Student should be able to visually inspect power tools to determine if they are safe to use.Standard 9.3 Student should be able to safely use power tools.
