Course Outline
Full Year Long Course
The advanced course will give the students a first hand experience to see what the field of residential construction offers. Students are given the chance to continue learning about traditional and modern forms of the Carpentry trade and the career opportunities found in the world of construction. All aspects of construction will be covered from the footings and foundations. As well as the corresponding trades that work with the building of a house, (i.e. architectural, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, and landscaping)
Key Learnings
The students will:
Explore the design process to show the students the entire aspect of constructing a house
Explore what building materials that it takes to build a house and relate it back to what might be used in different areas of the country and how that affects what we buy locally
Read and interpret plans, elevations, and details contained in basic construction drawings.
Demonstrate many aspects of the building process including what safety rules apply to the field of construction and the tools required to complete the job
Identify that along with the construction process is how the contractor can sometimes be the drafter/designer/builder
Describe how the specifications, and codes, students will get a better understanding about why local contractors build the way they do
Estimate and construct the house designed by the students
Demonstrate general safety, power and hand tools will be discussed to see what things are most important to the local contractors
Demonstrate all components of the building process, (i.e. foundations, floor framing, wall framing, ceiling framing, roof framing doors, windows, schedules, exterior finishing, interior finishing, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC and detailing)
Identify career opportunities
Develop communication, employability, and 21st Century skills
