Job Site Safety
Lesson Description
Students will be able to identify job site safety and prevent job site injuries. They will also be able to identify detailed procedures that provide guidance in the event of an accident in and other emergency on the job site.
Standards Emphasized in this Unit
Standard 5.1 Student should be able to explain the idea of a safety culture and its importance in the construction crafts.
Standard 5.2 Student should be able to identify causes of accidents and the impact of accident costs.
Standard 5.3 Student should be able to explain the role of OSHA in job-site safety.
Standard 5.5 Student should be able to recognize hazard and risk assessment techniques.
Standard 5.9 Student should be able to define safe work procedures to use around electrical hazards.
Standard 5.10 Student should be able to demonstrate the use and care of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Standard 5.11 Student should be able to explain the importance of hazard communications (HazCom) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
Standard 5.12 Student should be able to identify other construction hazards on your job site, including hazardous material exposures, environmental elements, welding and cutting hazards, confined spaces, and fires.
Standard 5.13 Student should be able to inspect job sites for safe working environment and report unsafe conditions.
Standard 5.15 Student should be able to clean and maintain work area and leave in safe condition.
Standard 5.16 Student should be able to follow tool checkout and maintenance procedures.
Pacing Guide
Day 1: Presentation-Present the PowerPoint on safety
Day 2: Activity- Take students on a walk through of the lab and show students some of the hazardous areas on the job site/lab. Come up with a checklist and discuss the different areas of a safe work environment.
Day 3: Assessment- Use assessment tools to check for understanding.
