Lesson 2: Measurement Tools and Layout Techniques
Lesson Description
Students will be introduced to measuring using the English measurement system and why the accurate addition and subtraction of measurements is required to create a quality product. Proper operation and care for the tape measure should be emphasized throughout the lesson. The lesson also introduces students to the proper technique for marking measurements on material and the use of a speed square or framing square to layout straight and angled lines.

Lesson Schedule
Day 1: Begin discussion on tape measures. Have a tape measure for each student. Demonstrate how to use it, what not to do, and how to assess the quality of the tool. Begin discussion on the English measurement system. Go through the English measurement power point and illustrate why accurate measurement is important and how to measure to 1/16". Student begin to complete measurement activity 1.
Day 2: Students finish measurement packet activity 1. Head to the shop and introduce the carpenters pencil and speed square. Discuss measurement from the edge of a board and the proper process for marking a measurements and cut lines. Demonstrate how to measure and mark a board using a tape and square. Discuss Waste side and how to know what the waste side of the board is.
Day 3: Review speed square and linear measurement. Introduce the drywall square and the Chalk line. Demonstrate how to use these tool to create straight cut lines on sheeting and dimensional lumber. Introduce Measurement Activity 2, students work with partners to complete activity 2.
