Pollution is a leading cause of habitat destruction on our planet.
Together, we can stop the demise of our habitats and therefore, the lives of our wildlife. If we don’t make the necessary changes to improve our pollution by changing our bad habits and containing invasive species, we will continue to brutally destroy our natural habitats around the world.
Pollution is a major cause of habitat loss.
Freshwater wildlife are most impacted by pollution. This is due to issues such as untreated sewage, mining waste, acid rain, and high concentration levels of fertiliser and toxic pesticides in our water. As rivers, wetlands, dams, creeks, and the ocean are home to wild animals, this man-made pollution is literally destroying their homes.
Not only is toxic pollution contaminating our waters, and destroying natural habitats, it is a major contributor to pollution of our soil and air, resulting in the death of land and flying animals too.
This is a serious issue that can have a significant impact on the environment, biodiversity, and the lives of humans and animals.
Another leading cause to animal’s homes being destroyed are, invasive species.
Some invasive species do great harm to biodiversity, they destroy natural habitats, such as plant life, which is home to a lot of our wildlife. Invasive species not only impact biodiversity but affect the economy. They damage property, housing, and infrastructure.
How would you like it if a total stranger just came into your home and destroyed it?
The negative consequences of invasive species are catastrophic and can range from mild to fatal for our wildlife. These include the complete loss or significant changes to natural habitats which can make them unliveable and result in the death of large numbers of native species.
As we can see, invasive species have a major negative impact on not only the destruction of our natural habitats, but the economy.
What can we do to help? I have the solution to how we can help to stop the destruction of natural habitats. We are going to be the tradies for animals!
At school we are finding scraps of fallen tree parts, pieces of bark to rebuild the homes of our native Australian marsupials, the possum. Schools and communities can take initiative by helping and donating their time to the cause, just as we are. Our goal is for McClelland College to provide homes for dozens of native possums, and their families. If all Australians get involved, we can help rehome so many animals in need.
What do I need from you?
From this moment, I need every single one of you to make small and simple changes to stop pollution and help to care and nurture or our natural habitats and keep our animals alive. Let’s help biodiversity!
