Food waste is detrimental to our communities and ecosystems. It impacts our economy and our ecosystems. This issue needs to be handled as soon as possible to save our planet.
Food waste costs a lot of money, both for us as individuals and the whole country. Studies have shown that the average household spends a significant portion of it's income on food that ends up being thrown out. Stores, restaurants and producers face financial loss because of unsold and spoiled produce. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN estimates that food waste costs the world economy $1 trillion annually. The financial toll of food waste affects both individuals and economies. Therefore battling it will not only improve environmental sustainability but also the economy. Reducing food waste and supporting sustainable businesses are ways we can contribute to economic growth and sustainability.
Food waste not only harms our atmosphere but also the Earth's ecosystems and biodiversity. Large-scale agriculture often uses excessive amounts of water, fertilisers and pesticides which ruins the soil and pollutes our water supplies. As more and more demand is placed on producers, natural habitats are converted into farmland, which causes loss of biodiversity. Wasting food wastes these resources and makes the negative impacts unnecessary. Addressing food waste is essential for the balance between human beings and nature.
In conclusion, if we don't rectify the problem that is food waste, our economies and precious ecosystems could collapse.
