Over Quarantine

A few student's comments on their time at home during the pandemic

Corona-cation for Taizon Walker

We all know that our quarantining was such a surprise. Who would’ve thought we’d do something like that? I know most kids were excited but I was scared. Not scared of the virus but of being home. Oh my goodness, I hate it. Just sitting around and watching tv being unproductive. What a waste of living, right? At first, I moped. And sobbed. And sobbed some more. Eventually, I saw it two ways. I could continue to mope or I could gather my life and use this time wisely. I did interview after interview. Some were in person and others were on zoom. In accordance with that, I worked out heavily. I did so many workouts and felt all around accomplished. Eventually, after months of looking, I got a job at Walmart. Let me tell you, it nearly hospitalized me. The shock and excitement that fled through my body was crazy. I had to sleep the rest of the day. I spent the rest of my break working and working out.

All I did this summer was play video games with my friends. My sister had work, and my brother had college. I didn't really have the option to go anywhere. I watched three or four shows with four to five seasons plus. I also went swimming every weekend. Sometime during June, around the 20th, I went to beach with my whole family. Earlier in the year I did work from school but then I did whatever I wanted to do after my work was done. That's pretty much it.

2020 for Madison Smith

Where do I even start. 2020 has been a mess, Kobe Bryant died, World War III was a trending topic, Covid-19 blew up all over the world and caused a panic, we were placed in quarantine for months, and school was cancelled. Overall, this summer was a mess. Because of Covid19, we lost the opportunity to complete the school year and we didn't have an actual summer vacation. So many people lost their jobs due to shutdowns, having to take care of their children, and many other reasons. People were struggling to keep their lights on because of those lost jobs, others that had money went to the store and bought all the food and stockpiled, but people who were less fortunate might not have gotten the resources they needed. People were going crazy over toilet paper for months, it's a crazy world we live in and I'm sure it will just get crazier throughout 2020.

I spent roughly twenty hours on TikTok and the other four hours sleeping and eating. After two weeks, I was able to dye my hair- that was fun. I don't remember anything during March, every day was just a big blur. From March until the first day of school, I was babysitting a little girl and boy. I did not get to go to the beach or visit my brother in California, which I usually do. I watched many shows including: Lucifer, Vampire Diaries, Greys Anatomy, Doctor Who, and The Originals. I am currently stuck on season 2 of Anatomy and I am re-watching Doctor Who. I watched all of the Harry Potter movies in two days as well! I spent sometimes, 20 hours on Roblox at a time. Then one night, I stayed up with my friends for five hours reading the script from Greys Anatomy and that's what made me watch it in the first place. I convinced my mom to let me get some piercing and I made some internet best friends!

Shelter in Place for Hannah Cockrell

As everyone knows 2020 has not been the best year, in fact it really has been rough for all of us. It also caught me by surprise that all of a sudden we all just had to go home for what turns out to be four months long. I would have never thought that the Corona virus could literally take over our lives.

To begin with, I am very thankful for the family that I have, and how they turned something bad into something being able to enjoy throughout the time in quarantine. My grandmother taught me and my sister so much about the world around baking and cooking and all of the techniques and proper ways to make a meal. For about 2 times out of the week, me and my sister would prepare a whole meal for the family, and it honestly felt good to cook for everyone and be able to say that I did that without help towards the end of the shelter in place.

Unfortunately, my birthday was during this time, but luckily I was able to make the best of it. I had a few friends come over and swim and I’m glad they got the chance to get out of the house for a little bit and have a great time. Friends were really important at this time to me because having to always be home and not being able to see them at school, I honestly don’t know how I would stay sane without them.

Lastly, if I had to recommend anything at all it would be the Jefferson Drive Thru Zoo. It was such a fun little trip to take and I was able to feed zebras and camels while mom was driving with donkeys all in her face. It all worked out perfectly with going out and still being safe and following the safety procedures. I even took a picture with the camel sticking its head through my window.

Even though the virus put a hold on people's lives, I'm pleased to say that it wasn’t all entirely bad. Yes, there were some disadvantages, but when you find things to occupy your time and are able to learn new things it can be fun and really rewarding in the end for yourself. 2020 hasn’t been the best year, but it certainly isn’t just absolutely terrible.

Summer at home for Alexia Sellers

Well, I started out quarantine on spring break because I was at a different school, but all things considered, it was a good spring break. I spent about two weeks at Janie's house and every other day after that. I was with her, Jayda, and Rayne all the time, but then at the end of July I got grounded for a month over something I should not have been doing, but it was good. I needed that change in my life and I'm in a better place now.
