COMING OUT

Advice for young people, adults and loved ones on coming out.

A guide has been written by LGBTQI+ young people, who have drawn on their own personal experiences to make the process of coming out easier for others.

DISCRIMINATION AND BULLYING

The Equality Act 2010 says you mustn’t be discriminated against because you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual.

EACH provides a free and confidential homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying reporting service for children and young people up to 18 years of age. You can call the freephone Helpline on 0808 1000 143 from 9am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday or scroll to the bottom of the linked page and use the online self-reporting form to receive the same support.

SUPPORT AND ADVICE

This resource explores some important topics in relation to being a member of the LGBTQI+ community and provides advice for LGBTQI+ young people on where to go to get additional support for mental health problems.

LGBT Foundation is a national charity delivering advice, support and information services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities.

FFLAG is a national charity dedicated to supporting parents and families and their LGBTQ+ members.You can visit their website or call 0300 688 0368 between 10am-8pm Wednesday-Thursday and 10am-6pm Friday-Saturday to speak to someone confidentially. 

The Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) are the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity. They have a huge amount of experience and expertise in providing support online, including through their digital mentoring service, Inter-AKT.

Quest provides pastoral support for LGBTQ+ Catholics in the UK. 

Hidayah is a national organisation for LGBTQ+ Muslims that runs social and support groups as well as campaigns. For more information, visit the website. 

The Inclusive Mosque Initiative is an intersectional feminist mosque dedicated to creating inclusive, safer places for marginalised Muslims and their families, especially non-traditional families. They are committed to reviving a rights-based Islam that challenges all forms of oppression. They call themselves a mosque to demonstrate that a mosque is made up of a community, not bound by a building.

Sarbat provide social opportunities, support, and resources for LGBTQ+ Sikhs in the UK, as well as promoting awareness and conversations about issues faced by people in this community. Visit their site to find out more and get in contact.
