As we get older, changes in our lives, such as retirement, bereavement or physical illness, can affect our mental health. Mental health problems aren’t an inevitable part of ageing, however. Most older people don’t develop mental health problems, and there is help available if you do. If you’re struggling to manage or not feeling like yourself, you don’t have to put up with it.

STAYING ACTIVE

Move Mates is a walking buddy project which makes going out for a walk a reality for people who would otherwise find it difficult to leave their homes. They pair people with a trained, friendly, local volunteer to meet regularly for a walk. These regular walks boost people’s confidence, reduce anxiety and improve physical and mental health outcomes.

Making regular exercise part of your routine is one of the best ways to stay well in later life, and can be a great opportunity to socialise and meet new people. Find local active Age UK groups here.

END OF LIFE

Thinking about the end of life can be tough, but being well informed can help us stay in control of the way we die. Find out more here.

There's no right or wrong way to feel when you're told you have a terminal illness – a health condition that you'll most likely die from. You can read more about the support and guidance you can receive here, as well as understand your situation a little better.

Compassion in Dying can help you prepare for the end of life, including how to talk about it, plan for it, and record your wishes. If you want to speak to someone, you can call 0800 999 2434.
