Module 6
Roman class have been making the most of the wonderful weather by finding opportunities to get out into our local community. These visits include trips to the local library for story sharing with adults, visiting the cafe for snack time and exploring the village green using chatting sheets to identify different plants and animals they see. Some students in Roman class also work on their gross motors skills while we are out, walking some of the way back to school!
Some students in Roman class have been taking trips to the local supermarket to buy snacks for the Phase 3 tuck shop. This is a great opportunity for students to generalise their skills in different setting and scenarios to ensure the learning is embedded. Students work on a range of different skills including following a symbol shopping list, loading the trolly, then loading on the conveyor belt and into the bags once paid, paying for the shopping using cash and in some cases working on gross motor skills such as walking around in a new and busier environment.
LO: To use an increased movement to activate an effect.
LO: To time an activation appropriately.
LO: To watch attentively while an adult does something interesting.
Roman class have weekly visits to the interactive room, all of Romans really enjoy accessing this area and exploring all of the different interactive resources in the room. This is a great opportunity for students to work on their individualised learning plan targets within a different setting to enable them to generalise these skills in different environments and enable them to transferring their learning which they work on daily in the classroom, when out of the classroom in a range of different settings and scenarios.
Module 5
Roman class had a wonderful trip down to the village library, students were able to take this opportunity to work on generalising their individual learning plan targets in a new environment. Students were also developing their love of reading by engaging with different adults listening to and exploring different stories.
LO: To be aware of simple commands of stop and go.
LO: To show a reaction to an activated effect.
LO: To pick small objects up using thumb and index finger with thumb towards the end of index finger.
LO: I will answer number questions using symbols, using familiar number songs and stories to support my learning.
LO: I will be able to show an intention behind a choice, showing a reaction if I am given the wrong item.
LO: I will attend social inclusion sessions with another class weekly being supported to engage with my peers.
Module 4
Roman class had a wonderful time on our school trip! We went to Dartford park to explore all of the adapted and accessible playground equipment. We went on the wheelchair accessible swing, roundabout and seesaw, as well as some of us being able to spend time out of our chairs exploring the other exciting equipment in the park. We then went to McDonalds for lunch and a McFlurry before heading back to school. Everyone had an amazing day - students and adults included!
This week Romans had a lovely walk down to the local village, we sat outside the cafe and enjoyed our snacks and then went to visit the local library. We did some 1:1 reading with adults and then all sat around for some group stories before going back to school.
LO: I can plant larger plants and/or bulbs with HUH support
LO: To continue to build my confidence in independent walking.
LO: I can plant larger plants and/or bulbs with HUH support
Romans have been enjoying the first week of spring by engaging in lots of outdoor learning opportunities! We have been working on our physical targets out on the playground including walking, cane work, walkers and going out in standers. Where appropriate we have been working on some of our individual learning targets out in the sunshine too! This term we have also been able to enjoy our horticulture lessons outside - we have been planting potatoes! 🌸
Module 3
Learning Objective: To have a consistent strategy for requesting ‘more’. This week in rebound students were focusing on having a strategy for requesting more. They would be bounced for some time then receive a countdown that boucning was stopping in 5-4-3-2-1. Once stopped students would be asked verbally and with signs if they wanted more bouncing. Students had different strategies for requesting more including clapping, tapping the trampoline, leaning towards the adult with firm eye contact, vocalising and signing more back. This was repeated a number of times throughout the session to check if pupils continued to use the same strategy.
Fine motor - LO: I will support my independent feeding by unscrewing pot lids, and opening crisp packets.
Cognition & Learning - LO: I will choose a book that I want to read and will sit showing focus for at least three minutes. I will turn the pages of a board book and scan the page for specific objects, using symbols to support.
Gross Motor - LO: To be aware of simple commands of stop and go
LO: To tap a photograph of the toy I am interacting with.
LO: To answer more detailed questions from a story about colours and numbers. E.g. ‘what colour is the …?’ and ‘how many … are there?’
LO: To identify myself and my ownership of objects.
Module 2
Roman class have been very busy preparing for our 'jingle bell junction' stall at our Christmas market! We have been making our Christmas chocolate bark by using a switch to melt our chocolate in the microwave, we then have used symbols to make a choice of which toppings we wanted to put on our bark! To make our Christmas baubles we poured watered down glue inside so that our decorations would stick all around, we then used symbols again to make choices of what we wanted to put in our baubles, the options included; Christmas glitter, bells, holly, pom poms and more! Finally we need to make our table cloth for our market stall, as our stall is called jingle bell junction we chose to decorate our table cloth using bells covered in paint, we picked the colour we wanted and then threw the bells down the paper, listening to the sound they made and watching the lines of colour come onto the table cloth!
In Roman class we have weekly opportunities to visit the soft play room, we split into groups so that this can be a 1:1 session for students to have opportunities for lots of intensive interaction with the adult they're working with. This session has been really useful to helping students to embed their learning and tranfer skills in different settings and scenarios. Students take their Individualised Learning Plans down to the soft play room so that all of their targets can be worked on during the session. In these pictures one student can be seen working on his cognition target - choosing the correct colour ball, another can be seen engaging in intensive interaction with an adult working on her communication target and finally another student can be seen working on his physical targets, spending time out of his wheelchair moving around the room and working on exploring objects with two hands.
Roman class have continued to make great progress on our physical targets, which we have opportunities to work on daily. The physical targets are individualised to each student to best support them and their needs. One student can be seen to be working on her cane use, transitioning around the school using her cane to scan her environment. Another can be seen working on her kneeling, keeping herself up right and balanced with no adult support. Lastly a student can be see using her standing sling, this attaches to the ceiling hoist and allows her to walk around the classroom independently, making her own choices of where she wants to go (most times over to the interactive board to have a boogie to Little Mix!)
We had a great Children In Need day on Friday, we all came in in non uniform and took part in a range of Children In Need activities including watching videos to learn about it, playing games and making our own Pudsey masks! We used symbols to make choices of what colours we wanted to use to make our masks and then created our masks either independently or with hand over hand support from an adult!
Roman class have been enjoying their soft play sessions. In these session students work on their individualised learning plan targets as well as enjoying some peer interaction!
In History we were learning about the invention of radio broadcasting. We used talking tiles to record our own 'broadcasts' of our vocalisations and then played them back. We listened to our own and then swapped with peers and listened to their broadcasts!
In Horticulture we have been exploring compost in wet and dry forms. We have worked on our motor skills by scooping the soil and then used chatting sheets to communicate if we like or don't like the feeling of the soil.
This term in Art we are learning about Pop Art, this week we produced our own pieces of Pop Art using paint dabbers. Students used their prefered method of communication including spoken words, Etrans, PECS and widget symbols to make a choice of which colours they wanted to use to create their art work.
Module 1
We have been really enjoying our rebound sessions each week! These are a great opportunity for us to work on our physical targets and also our communication targets! We are able to use our prefered method of communication to ask for more throughout our turn on the trampoline.
We have been working on our independence skills by putting our plates in the sink following snack and lunch.
We used a pump connected to the switch adapter to blow up our halloween decorations!
In cooking we have been using the switch adapter to blend our ingredients together.
This week in Roman class we have been being especially excellent communicators! We use a wide range of different methods of communication including Signing, PECS, Eye gaze using an ETran, GoTalks, Gestures, Vocalisations and Spoken words! Students are supported and encouraged to use their prefered means of communication throughout the whole school day, although snack time is an especially good motivator!
When the weather is nice we have been continuing to enjoy our weekly trips out in the community. We use symbols to find the correct items on our shopping lists in the Co-op and then sit outside the local cafe to have our snacks!
In Music we have been listening to and playing along to different genres. We have been using symbols to communicate if we like or don't like each genre.
