We tried to start our own fires with flint and steels.
We each sharpened our willow stick using potato peelers.
Our sticks were ready to be extra long skewers.
We carefully followed the instructions to roast marshamallows.
Student's learned how to safely used Secateurs to cut Willow branches ready for using to melt the marshmallows on later. We also cut branches from the Apple tree to make bird feeders using lard and bid seed and then hung them outside for the birds to get a good meal.
This week, we used both Gross and FIne motor skills to support our activities, we also used our communication and team building skills with each and Carol,. We also risk takers whilst hunting for the different insects.
In the penultimate week at Bore Place, we took part in a bug hunt, identifying what species lived in the logs on the top field. We walked through lots of squelchy mud being careful not to lose our wellington boots, then used our gross motor skills to make our way across the trim trailin the worlds without touching the floor. In the afternoon, we made some insect sun catchers.
This week we were very unfortunate with the weather. Students took part in the great garden bird survey event, but the rain meant there were few birds flying about, they prefered to be tucked up in their nests. We did see on the journey to Bore Place, a buzzard and a Pheasant! After the survey, we made our own birds following both visual and verbal instructions , we also used careful cutting and artistic skills.
Year 11 students had a wonderful and hands-on learning experience at Bore Place! They not only engaged in practical tasks like planting seeds for the restaurant menu but also got creative (whilst surveying the number of worms in the planting beds) with mud volcanoes, learning about chemical reactions. It was exciting for them to see the "eruption" and then follow it up with a visit to the cows and calves. Caitlin’s interactive storybook seems like a perfect way to connect what they learned with the real animals they saw. These types of experiences are great for reinforcing both scientific concepts and a deeper appreciation for nature!
