Module 5

In Saxon class this module, we are building on our understanding of our amazing planet and all the different plants & animals that live here with us - after all, we are all sharing one big home! Througout this module Saxon Class explore and delve into how out everyday actions impact the environment and creatures around us big & small. We will find out more about how the little things we do to help out world, can make a big difference to all of us sharing it. It is important to remember that the Earth isn't just for us; we need to be kind and think about all the other living things and how everything is connected.
In Cooking & Nutrition lessons this module, Saxons have been supported to find & pick herbs and vegetables grown in the school garden to use in recipes each week. Saxons particularly enjoyed making guacamole and tzatziki dips, which we then tasted and enjoyed with some tortilla chips & crisps. Saxons followed key visual instructions, alongside verbal instructions to chop specific herbs from the garden and add these to other key ingredients to make the delicious dips.
During Horticulture lessons this module, Saxon pupils have been taking care of the garden and helping to regularly water the plants & herbs in the garden and polytunnel. Pupils have followed key verbal instructions to take part in weekly tasks including picking weeds in the garden, raking the grass and watering plants, vegetables and herbs growing in the garden.
In Science this module, we have been looking at drugs & medicines and have explored a variety of doctors resources & tools including syringes and stethoscopes. Saxon pupils have enjoyed using syringes to experiment with pushing, pulling and pretending to use the syringe to give 'medicine'. Some of the pupils in Saxons were brave and put the stethoscope ear buds in their ears and then listened to a heart beat of an adult helping them and also their own heart beat.

A few of Saxons enjoyed their first swim session of this term at Fairfield Leisure Centre. During the session Saxons listened to key instructions to help them develop their confidence in the water and they were all able to float in the water with the aid of a pool noodle. Saxons showed good turn taking skills, throwing a beach ball to each other and two pupils even went under the water to retrieve water toys!

Saxon Class have been continuing to work on their independent self help & personal care skills. Saxons have followed key verbal and symbol directions to complete familiar routines for hoovering around the Phase 3 department, completing the washing up after snack & lunchtime and also making drinks for themselves & their peers at snack & lunchtime.
In Horticulture lessons this term Saxons have been looking at & smelling a variety of herbs, which we have then sown the seeds of in plant pots. Saxons have followed step by step visual prompts to complete the task. A couple of Saxons particularly enjoyed watering the seeds, possibly a little too much!
In our Inquiry Cooking & Nutrition lessons this term, we have been exploring colours & emotions within the story of 'Colour Monster'. During the week where we explored the emotion 'happy' and the colour yellow; we made lemon shortbread, which tasted delicious! All of Saxons joined in with making the shortbread, following the step by step recipe from start to finish with support from members of Saxon team. A few of Saxons were even brave enough to taste a slice of lemon, before we then squeezed the rest of the leftover lemons, to get the lemon juice to add to the shortbread dough. Saxons were being risk takers and they were good at communicating whether they liked the lemon or not, selecting from 'like' or 'do not like' symbols.

Saxon Class showed great listening & attention skills whilst taking part in a football session with the football coach George who came in to visit us. Saxons were supported to join in with a variety of games which tested their ball skills; including kicking the ball at a target, kicking the ball in & out between cones lined up on the floor and catching the ball in a cone.

In Horticulture lessons with Kirsty each week this term, Saxon Class have been learning about how to look after the plants and vegetables in the garden. We have enjoyed watering, weeding and gathering leaves with a rake. Saxons have all been using their listening skills to follow key verbal and symbol instructions to complete tasks.
Saxons followed step by step visual prompts, to sow seeds into pots. We are hoping that our carrot seeds will grow and we can enjoy the carrots!
Saxons have been practising their functional skills, using knives to chop various vegetables which we can find growing in the garden.
Saxon Class have been listening to & following key instructions to complete functional skills activities and jobs around the phase.
A daily job which Saxons enjoy completing is recycling; taking our own class recycling to the bins and then collecting other recycling from the classes in Phase 3.
