A snippet of what we have been up to in Aztec Class this week...
This week we have been really proud of Aztec Class. They took part in a class assembly, focussing on tolerance and what it means to us. This relates to our British Values and each week we have been exploring a different value.
In Art, we created pieces inspired by patterns/fabrics of Africa...
In the mornings we have been working as a team to complete puzzles.
We have also been learning about puberty and how our body changes throughout this time. We discussed the different emotions we may feel and how hormones can affect our mood. We talked about how our tastes may change, including food tastes, friendships and music.
In Maths the class have been learning to give and follow directions. We played a game where one volunteer was the robot and the other hid a cube. We then took it in turns to direct the robot towards the hidden object.
After our first experiment failed with the cress, we tried again giving the seeds a different pot and used cotton wool instead of paper. The class have enjoyed observing the cress grow and pleased to have had a successful experiment this time.
In Art, the class learned to print using a variety of leaves. We went out onto the field and identified some different leaves such as oak and maple. We then used crayons to rub over the leaves and paper.
In Maths this week we have been creating amounts using different coins. We also compared different coins to make the same total.
We also spend time in the garden, relaxing and noticing!
This week we tried chin chins, a sweet snack traditionally made in West Africa. We students practised making breadcrumbs, mixing, measuring and frying. They tasted delicious and were a huge hit!
This week, Aztec Class made a poppy wreath for D-Day. During snack time we often watch Newsround as a way to lean about current topics. The class discussed the importance of this day and how it is celebrated.
We have also planted cress seeds. The class talked about all the things a plant needs to grow, carefully positioning them on the windowsill for sunlight, we will water them every day and wait patiently for them to grow. We have a ruler at the ready in preparation for measuring and comparing the height. This will link nicely to learning about where our food comes from.
In Art this week, the class looked at art from indigenous Australia. They then created their own pieces, making their own choices inspired by this style. They focussed really well and enjoyed listening to the music with the sound of a didgeridoo.
Afternoon Tea
Aztec Class were thrilled to welcome so many families into school on Wednesday. They had such a great time and have not stopped talking about it. They loved all the preparations leading up to the event, particularly making cupcakes...yum!
A friend for life...
During playtime, Harper came to join us and needless to say, the class enjoyed meeting and greeting her. We are so very proud of how the students interacted with Harper, stroking her gently and talking to her calmly and playfully.
The Festival of Eid
The class enjoyed getting creative whilst making a moon and star decoration. We learned about how and why Muslims celebrate Ramadan and Eid, exploring the different activities they take part in during this time.
Aztec class have been preparing for the parent's afternoon tea by practising handwriting to make amazing invitations and also using their pattern knowledge they have been learning in Maths to create a beautiful necklace to gift next week. The class are very proud of the hard work they have achieved for the afternoon tea preparation so far.
Aztec class made delicious burgers in their cooking lesson this week. Perfect for the warm weather!
Class rules have been a focus this week with the class deciding as a team exactly what rules are important, such a tucking in our chairs and lining up sensibly and quietly. Great teamwork, Aztec!
In Science, Aztec class had great fun making electrical circuits. They were turning on light bulbs and making helicopters work.
Work Experience
Aztec class have been responsible for Phase 3 tuck shop this half term- they have been visiting each class selling delicious treats to raise money.
Exercise
We have been incorporating yoga into our weekly physical routine. Just 15 minutes a day helps balance, coordination and well being.
Maths
We have been working on patterns in Maths. The students have enjoyed making patterns using numicons and playing fun games to identify odd and even. The class love the challenge of being asked if a number is odd or even at any time during the school day!
