Viking Class 2023-2024
Transdisciplinary Theme: Who we are
Central Idea: Our communities have changed over time.
Lines of Inquiry:
How have actions from the past have influenced who we are today?
How is our school community connected to the wider world?
How can exploring our locality help us to understand our identity?
How have different cultures impacted on our lives?
Viking Class considered their local area, and created representations of their local "mental map."
This has been a very busy term. We have been learning about different celebrations, Diwali and Thanksgiving to name a couple.
We have made our christmas cakes, we have not decorated them yet, but they will be iced and taken home for families to enjoy. When making these cakes the students showed what a great team they have become, taking it in turns to share out the ingredients making sure everyone had the same. Helping one another to mix the ingredients together. It was all the students' own elbow grease, no mixers were used.
We have also practised our piping skills in preparation for decorating our christmas cakes.
We are also preparing for the inquiry afternoon, where Viking class will be signing the Band Aid song “Do they know it’s Christmas.” A great deal of fun and concentration is being had.
We are enjoying a couple of really entertaining books this term, “Gangster Granny” , this is our class reader. We are also reading “Danny Chung does not do maths.” in english, it also has an unpredictable Granny.
Viking students are working together to make Christmas cake mix as part of our celebrations of different cultures.

Module 3 Vikings
We began the term by learning about Passover. We learned about the foods the Jewish people eat during that time of celebration. We linked our learning about the Jewish religion and cooking. We made bread as one of our dishes. The students seemed to enjoy the experience and then the following day were able to take them home.
During lunch time towers have been made with Jenga bricks.
And not just any old tower.
Viking students have also practised their spreading and cutting skills, to enable them to make themselves a sandwich. They had a choice of fillings, so they had free reign to choose.
One young man chose chicken, tomato and jam. He quickly decided they were not the best combo and made himself a jam sandwich.
Viking class have worked hard in their English lessons learning about where a pebble comes from and how old it could be.
In Maths they have been refining their ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.
Viking enjoyed with other classes from the phase talks from two people who do completely different jobs in the NHS. A nurse and a head of security. They were able to play with various bits of equipment. All the children asked some really interesting questions.
It has been another really busy but enjoyable term.
Module 4 Vikings
This module has been equally as busy as the other three. A large percentage of the class were taking part in the preparation and performance of "A midsummer nights dream" which took place in the Woodville Halls in Gravesend. Their hard work was evident in the brilliant execution of their interpretation. It was enjoyed by all who attended and those that took part.
The remainder of the class have been working on developing their social skills, often working with another class.
The students collected recipes and they were put together to make the Viking Caribbean Recipe book. We were learning about the transatlantic slave trade, we studied the Caribbean. They do enjoy and activity which means research using their chromebooks.
As part of our research it was only right to taste test some fruits which are grown in the Caribbean or warm climates.
Viking class worked hard in art this term, producing work that looked very realistic. They were studying the work of the Claes Oldenburg was a Swedish-born American sculptor best known for his public art installations, typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects. The class were constructing food produces. The burgers and pizzas looked very realistic when complete.
This term during our visits to the library we were lucky enough to have the Librarian read parts of our class reader,"Danny Chung does not do maths". This was a great experience for us all and you could hear a pin drop while Stefan read to us. It is the best way to start a Thursday morning.
Viking conducted some science experiments that they were really engaged in. We managed to take some really lovely photos of them engrossed in their work.
It has been another very busy but enjoyable module.
Module 5 Vikings
Module 5 has been another busy module. The year 11 in Vikings have been visiting Bore place every Friday come rain or shine, they have been quite lucky with the weather. They have milked a cow (Not a real one, a simulation) they have planted plants, they have made wild flower art. They have been for walks to see the cows and a great deal more. They return to school very happy and sometimes a little weary.
We have made a few different things during cooking this module. We started with easy samosas, which involved precooked fillings and tortillas which they folded into triangles which were then put in the oven for a little while. These were very successful.
We had an Enlightenment afternoon for the parents to attend. The students worked hard with the staff to prepare a feast to share and decorated the Buddhist alter. The classroom smelled lovely and the classroom was a haven of peace and mindfulness.
Module 6 Vikings
We have had a busy first week of Module 6.
We have been learning about about the impacts of WW2 on Great Britain, we have been looking at rations, we have researched some recipes and are hoping to recreate a few of them over module 6.
On Friday a number of the students walked over to New Ash Green's Library. They enjoyed their time looking at the books and wandering round the garden. Some sat in the garden to read the books they had chosen. They were excellent representatives for the school.
The first cooking lesson of the term . Having researched recipes that could be made using the rations available in WW2, we decided to make Carrot cookies. There were a few that thought the idea of carrots in cookies was a bit strange. They all worked in twos and took turns adding ingredients and making the mixture. All the students tried grating the carrots. They all did very well and there were no grated fingers.
Also in art the class have been researching aboriginal art the results have been fabulous. They have also looked at other forms of art which include patterns.
In maths we have been learning about money. Working together using play money to increase understanding.
When the weather was good, Viking class have enjoyed taking a lesson outside. This was an art lesson, where they were Leaf Rubbing. Using paper a number of different leaves and crayons. Followed by the daily mile.
Viking class were lucky enough to have a coach come in to teach them Tag Rugby, much fun was had by all.
Viking class also joined the rest of the phase to organise the field in preparation for the school fete.
We also attempted another recipe from our ration recipe book. Cheese twirls, this meant making pastry from scratch, which is no mean feat.
Our assemblies this module have been based on British Values. Each class has taken part and each week produced their own assembly. Viking class's assembly was about "The Rule of Law." Most stepped out of their comfort zone to stand and read in front of the phase. Tey were all amazing.
We also had a good try at making Jam tarts.
The students are really enjoying having more equipment at lunch times. Also being able to mix with all of the phase.
Activities week. Our theme is "Transport through time", they have learned about transport through time, then they have chosen an area to do more research. They have compliled a fact file about their chosen area of study. Then using resources given to them made vehicles to go with their fact file.
They made posters to advertise our learning and name tags for their models.
All this hard work is shown in a great exhibition, the whole phase showing off what they have learned during the week week. We were joined by the senior leadership team, who seemed pretty impressed by what all the students had achieved.
As we reach the final week of the school year, Viking class organised and took part in a football tournament. Playing against other classes in the phase. A great time was had by all.
The first thing to do was to lay out the pitches and put together a goal.
Followed by the games.
It has been a very varied and busy year. We have had lots of experiences and even more laughs. This year in Viking Class has been a great deal of fun.
