This term, Roman Class continue to follow the Transdisciplinary Theme of Who We Are. We will use an inquiry into the natural world and use this to follow our Central Idea of i) How we use our senses to help us explore our environment ii) how we will communicate choices and show preferences of everything within our environment iii) how we can build on prior experiences and use this knowledge to make more informed choices.
Our Lines of Enquiry will be
What do our senses tell us about the outside world
What natural sensory experiences can we explore
How can we make choices
When we have a new experience, how can we show a preference
We will also be doing lots of maths skills, continuing with our literacy - we all love sensory phonics - and learning how to be more independent and increase our functional skillset.
Lots to do!
We have worked hard on our Writing Skills this week (Week 1 Module 5)
And tracing over vertical lines - with fantastic concentration.
Week 2: As our theme this term is The Great Outdoors, it is lovely that two of the students are able to go to Bore Place in Edenbridge and learn outdoor crafts and become familiar with nature. A couple of photos of today's trip.
Getting to know trees, hanging up bird feeders and generally enjoying the Great Outdoors.
During Wk 3 we have been working hard on recognising shape using the program on the whiteboard, finding shapes in sensory materials and also making repeated African cloth patterns with printers.
Week 4: and again lots of work on communication work (as always) in Romans this week. As well as some great signing for snacks. We use a Total Communication approach in the class and students have different ways of communicating their needs .
Using a chatting sheet to make a sentence requestion.
Here we have how the Etran has enabled one our pre-verbal students to choose what she wants for snack and to request more using symbols
The GoTalk 6 Grid allows a student to choose their option but to also get a voice feedback. This student is now using their voice more.
PECs is a way students can request something. The photo shows how clever the student is at discriminating the object he wants (biscuits!)
During Week 5, to have fun in the sun, and continue with our line of inquiry of the Great Outdoors , we had fantastic social time in our market garden with our families. It was lovely to see everyone and wonderful to have such supportive families.
During Week 5 we have been using the lovely weather to work on our gross motor skills. We have also been developing our muscles when the surface we are on is not rigid.
We strengthen our muscles, problem solve and reflect on what works when we climb apparatus.
Great hand eye co-ordination and blance to navigate the trim trail.
Not only good exercise for our legs (and climbing on and off the trampette) but great fun too!
Strengthening our core muscles during rebound.
