Visual art (architecture, sculpture, painting), performance art (theatre, opera & musical theatre, dance, cinema), and literature belong in a broad category of pursuit called the “humanities.” This course particularly looks at the role of art, literature, music in relation to human life and culture. Students are engaged in examining values, issues, beliefs, and the role of aesthetics in human society.
In the second semester, students examine contemporary economic, geo-political, and social issues in selected Asian countries and regions such as Japan, China, North & South Korea, India, exploring the historic and cultural forces that affected, changed, and shaped and continue to affect the traditions, values, and institutions of the Asian countries. Students examine the expansion and interactions of cultural regions in Asia and understand the role of Asian nations in an interconnected world. The students use the tools and methods of the social scientist to develop and/or evaluate present-day decisions and issues.
