Nursing Services: WBL (Work-Based Learning) is intended to provide students with an opportunity to develop further understanding of professional issues, utilize employability skills, and demonstrate mastery of academic and technical skills learned throughout this program of study. Instruction will be delivered through classroom instruction during the 1st semester at MHS and in conjunction with a work-based learning placement during their 2nd semester. Students will have two options to meet the 2nd semester work-based learning requirements for this course.
Option 1 - Students will have the opportunity to take the Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) certification program though Leeward Community College (LCC). This course is designed to educate and train nurse assistants in long term care facilities and will consist of lecture, laboratory practice, and observation.
In order to take the CNA course, students will need to pay an LCC tuition fee, which includes course materials, scrubs, stethoscope, etc. Tuition cost will vary, depending on the total number of participants, and the estimated cost ranges from $500-$900. Please note that students will not receive college credit from LCC for this licensure program. Students will also need to arrange for their own transportation to LCC for the duration of this program. This will include some weekdays, weekends, and Spring Break. Approximate time spent on the course is 150 hours total.
Option 2: Students choosing NOT to do the LCC CNA certification course will need to seek a work-based learning placement in the healthcare field. The teacher will support the student in finding a placement. However, it will be the responsibility of the student to secure a position, arrange private transportation, and complete a minimum of 60 hours of work-based experience.
All students will finalize a digital course portfolio providing evidence of mastery of the program standards and readiness for postsecondary and the workforce.
