MICHAEL JAMES
From Pages to Practice: Real World Solutions to Age Old Problems
Educational Leader - Change Agent, USA
In redefining how we teach literature, we will connect the themes found in canons to real world problems. The next step is designing a learning environment where students explore solutions to the issues in the text through real world application.
This session will show teachers how to make literature more engaging and relevant by connecting its themes to students’ everyday lives and the world around them. Participants will learn strategies for helping students recognize how the issues and conflicts in texts mirror real challenges in society, and how to guide them in brainstorming solutions to those problems. By framing literary analysis as a pathway to problem-solving, teachers can move students from discussion to action - whether through class projects, debates, or community-based learning opportunities. This approach not only strengthens students’ understanding of literature but also builds critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of agency in addressing real-world issues.
Practical Strategies for Engagement – Participants will leave with concrete methods for connecting literary themes to real-world issues, making classroom discussions more relevant and meaningful for students.
Tools for Student Problem-Solving – Participants will gain strategies to guide students in moving from literary analysis to action, equipping them to design and present solutions to authentic challenges reflected in texts.
