The Value of Outside the Classroom Opportunities: A teacher and student perspective
Karen is an Education Consultant for Discover the World Education and the Geographical Association, UK
This presentation is designed to empower teachers with the confidence, skills, and inspiration to offer outdoor and overseas learning opportunities to their students. Drawing on current research and the presenter’s extensive experience in leading educational experiences beyond the classroom, the session will explore the transformative benefits of such opportunities from both teacher and student perspectives. It will demonstrate how learning outside the classroom promotes not only academic growth, but also enhances pastoral care and character development—fostering resilience, curiosity, and a stronger connection to the wider world.
The session will also highlight the unique value of overseas trips, showing how cultural immersion and exposure to new environments can inspire students and re-energize teachers.
Practical strategies will be shared on how to make these experiences accessible and inclusive for all students, as well as how to effectively gain support from senior leaders and parents.
Participants will receive guidance on essential planning considerations, including health and safety, risk management, and logistical preparation.
Finally, the workshop will emphasize how leading these initiatives contributes to a teacher’s professional development and career progression, equipping educators with skills in leadership, organisation, and global awareness that are highly valued in today’s educational landscape.
