Breakout Thinking: The Approaches to Learning (AtL) Skills through Educational Escape Rooms

In this hands-on workshop, you will step into an educational escape room and experience how immersive, purposeful challenges can develop the Approaches to Learning (AtL) skills that underpin the MYP and IBDP.
Drawing from examples from the MYP projects, IBDP Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the group subjects, this session will explore how students and educators can foster collaboration, critical thinking and self-management skills while making learning an adventure.
You will decode best practices, guided by supporting literature, break down tried and tested examples, and walk away with a customizable escape room template.

Session Outcomes:
1. Application Strategies:
Attendees will explore real-world applications of AtL-focused educational escape rooms in MYP Projects, IBDP Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and group subjects, supported by educator insight and academic literature. Takeaway strategies will include preparatory lessons (prior to the escape room), interdisciplinary puzzles (e.g. English and Math) and reflection activities,
2. Designing: Personalized Escape Room Template
Participants will design a customizable escape room framework that aligns with a particular AtL and their curricular needs. By the end of the session, they will have a structured template that can be adapted for various subjects and learning objectives, for immediate classroom application.
