Navigator’s Notes
The first thing in the morning we (virtually) traveled back to Concord, Massachusetts. We learned more about Concord writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott. We also learned about the events that happened in and around Concord on April 19, 1775. This was the day when the "shot heard round the world" was fired and the American Revolution began. After this our in-person team met with UH Philosophy Professor Dr. Joseph Tanke. We had a great conversation about anxiety, the things that we worry about, and how to impact the future. After lunch we headed over to the UH Music Department. We met Aunty Nola, Aunty Erin, Uncle Eric, and Aunty Kanani. They're from Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus and Hawai‘i Opera Theater and are working with a group of kids to perform the Magic Flute. We jumped in and joined them. We learned how to sing "E Nana Kakou I Na Manu," learned about the history of Opera, and even learned a hula dance. After this it was back to the UH p4c office for our weekly Yoga class with Aunty Naoko. This week we talked about how we can put ourselves down and say negative things to ourselves. We tried thinking of a positive word and then a negative word; noticing the differences that we felt in our bodies. After this we did our Yoga poses and some guided relaxation exerices. It was a great way to end a busy day! Some of us even fell asleep!
Visit Walden Pond and listen to excerpts from Henry David Thoreau's book "Walden."
