Memories & Thoughts from Today :)
Navigator’s Notes
Today we learned that one of life's lessons is taking bad things and, through persistence and a positive attitude, creating good out of them. Today was supposed to be our final in-person session. But then COVID happened and we had to quickly shift to Zoom. We were sad about missing out on our final in-person session. But we still all showed up and Zoom. And, you know what? It turned out to be a pretty fun day. We heard two amazing speakers and had a lot of time to hang out and play games. It was also nice that our sick friends could join us on Zoom and, so, didn't feel so lonely.
We got to meet two very kind and smart guest speakers from the Matsunaga Institute for Peace. First, in the morning, Ms. Jessica Lau talked to us about microaggresions. Microaggressions are the unkind and sometimes unconscious negative thoughts that we have about groups of people. We had some good conversations, shared our experiences, and thought of examples of microaggressions. Then in the afternoon Ms. Miku Narisawa Zoomed in with us all the way from Japan. Ms. Narisawa was a 6th Grader in Miyagi, Japan when the terrible earthquake and tsunami disaster happened on March 11, 2011. She told the story of how she and her family survived the disaster and the challenges that they faced afterwards. Then we thought about how we could prepare for a tsunami and about what "peace" means to each of us.
The last thing we did today was a little (virtual) traveling. We flew to Maui and visited Haleakalā National Park. That was fun! It was an unexpected day. But we adapted and adjusted to make it into another good day on the VRT.
