Memories & Thoughts from Today :)
Navigator’s Notes
Our day started normally enough. We got on the VRT Bus and (virtually) drove to Falmouth, Massachusetts. Then things got weird. Waiting for us at the harbor was Steve, the VRT Whale. We hopped on Steve and hitched a ride across the ocean to nearby New Bedford Harbor. Apparently we also travelled through time because we were greeted in New Bedford by the 1850's ladies, Ruth & Abby. Ruth and Abby were very friendly, very informative, and very entertaining. They told us all about life in their time. New Bedford was at the center of the prosperous whaling industry. Ships and people from all around the world travelled to and from New Bedford. This includes, we learned, many men from Hawai‘i. There were deep connections between Hawai‘i and New Bedford. King Kalakaua even visited there! After this fun talk, Ruth and Abby transformed out of character and into their true selves, Rangers Lucy and Judy. They told us so much more about the history of New Bedford, its connections with Hawai‘i, and how they worked to create New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. It was really inspiring listening to them. Thinking of what they told us, we then had a short p4c discussion about "What does it mean to be connected?" and "How can we become connected?"
After our visit with Ranger Lucy and Ranger Judy, we returned to our (virtual) travels. Paige and Kamden took us to Six Flags Amusement Park and then we continued down to a campground just outside of Washington, D.C. Our day concluded with our second cooking class with Aunty Beth. This week we made eggs two ways. We made French Toast and we also made Scrambled Eggs. A good end to a memorable day!
