Today we visited with Ranger Teri from Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Colorado. This is the first time most of us had heard this story. As Ranger Teri said, it is a darker bit of history. We learned about how an American Cavalry regiment under the command of Colonel Chivington attacked and massacred a village of peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho people. So sad. But, as Ranger Teri also said, it is important to hear about and learn from the harder parts of history too.
Next we had a thought-provoking p4c discussion inspired by our Sand Creek Massacre NHS visit. Thinking of the hero's welcome that Chivington initially received, we wondered "Can people be seen as heroes even if they're bad?" After this we finished out our morning by hitting the (virtual) road and traveling to Gallup, New Mexico. We stayed at the historic El Rancho Hotel, enjoyed a great dinner, and loved seeing the neon light up at night.
In the afternoon we had p4c Book Club. We talked about Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and discussed ideas about what the worst possible birthday could be. Then we finished up the day with LEGO class with Aunty Kierstin. We saw some cool LEGO building ideas, built our own ocean scene, and answered some trivia questions. That topped of a great VRT day!
The force is strong in you, young Robert!
We (virtually) spent the night in Gallup, New Mexico!
