We began this week's VRT 2022 homecoming events with a fabulous presentation by Miki Tomita and Hye Jung Kim Tano from Education Incubator. Aunty Miki and Aunty Hye Jung are good friends of VRT and always help us to finish off the summer well. Building upon our theme of "Drawing from the past in order to navigate the future," Aunty Miki told us the history of Hōkūle‘a. She brought the stories of Herb Kāne, Eddie Aikau, Papa Mau Piailug, Pinky Thompson, Nainoa Thompson, Lacy Veach, Pilahi Paki, and Pono Shim into our space. It was great to learn from the wisdom of these great men. Then Aunty Hye Jung gave us a tour of the canoe! She showed us all sorts of things that you normally would never get to see and told us stories about Hōkūle‘a's trip to Australia. After she was done sharing and answering our questions, Aunty Hye Jung hung out with us as we talked about our p4c question: "Do we choose who we are?"
After visiting with Aunty Miki and Aunty Hye Jung we (virtually) travelled up to the UH Uehiro Academy and spend some time getting ready for Sunday's Journey's End event. Then we had our last cooking class with Aunty Beth. We made COOKIES! They were so delicious. Then we (virtually) spent the night at the Disney Aulani Resort. Another memorable day on this summer's VRT!
Today we learned more about Aunty Pilahi Paki & Uncle Pono Shim's teaching on aloha.
