Navigator’s Notes
We began our morning by (virtually) exploring the iconic "mother road," Route 66. We also took a side-trip to soak in the magnificent beauty of Grand Canyon National Park. After this our in-person crew had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Bjørn Kjos-Hannsen from the University of Hawai‘i Mathematics Department. Dr. Kjos-Hannsen had us think about examples of what's complex, what's simple, and what looks complex but is really simple. Then we played the fun "Complexity Guessing Game." After p4c we completed our morning with a long and thought-provoking p4c discussion about "Why do (some) humans bully the less fortunate?"
In the afternoon we had another guest speaker. We were very happy to once again visit with our friend Ranger Christian from Badlands National Park and the Oglala Lakota Nation. Ranger Christian joined us via Zoom and shared the traditional ecological knowledge of his culture. We learned a lot about how the Oglala Lakota people interacted with their natural world. To them people weren't separate from nature; they were part of it. "It is not about understanding nature," said Ranger Christian, "it is about building a relationship with it." After a few fun rounds of p4c Speed Ball -- We set the new record! It took 14.43 seconds for all 20 of us to get the Community Ball -- we had our last Yoga class with Aunty Naoko. We talked a little bit about being a witness to our thoughts and being able to control them. Then we played a game where we rotated through different Yoga poses and, for the first time, did partner Yoga. It was an awesome and memorable end to our Yoga class.
The Disney Cars movie is a retelling of the story of Route 66 -- the first “mother road” that connected the U.S. from East to West.
