The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree
For this week’s Text Talk Thursday task the students listened to the retelling of a traditional Metis story called "The Giving Tree," written and illustrated by Leah Dorion. This is a wonderful story about the Metis culture, from the perspective of a young boy as he describes finding the "great giving tree" with his mother and father. "The Giving Tree" focuses on the Metis values of strength, kindness, courage, tolerance, honesty, respect, love, caring, balance, patience and the important connection with the Creator and Mother Earth. After listening to the story, the students answered various questions to demonstrate their comprehension and understanding of the text.

As a culminating activity, the students had the opportunity to explore Metis storytelling by participating in an Indigenous art project. They were asked to bring the stunning work of Indigenous artist Leah Dorion to life, while exploring and incorporating different mediums. The students created their own “Giving Tree” artwork to reflect the style of the illustrations in the story, using construction paper and the technique of Metis Dot Art.

Diverse Languages of Indigenous Cultures
In Social Studies, the students have been learning about the diverse languages spoken by indigenous people. We watched a video about the importance of passing on the languages and linguistic heritage within cultures, as many are endangered and are at risk of becoming extinct. The students then explored the Metis language of Michif using a website to translate a variety of English words and phrases.

This week in PE, we started learning some basic badminton skills. The students were taught how to grip the racket properly and the basic footwork when serving. They also enjoyed rallying with a partner to practice their underhand and overhead shuttle passes. While rallying, they worked on their hand-eye coordination as well as developing control of the shuttle.
