Comic Books
Comic Books
Next week, the students are going to start learning how to write graphic novels. Graphic novels are stories that include detailed illustrations and short bursts of text or speech bubbles. The story is often written in rectangular or square panels. To prepare for graphic novel writing, the students learned about the history of comic books. They also read "Otto's Orange Day" written by Frank Cammuso and Jay Lynch followed by answering questions to reinforce their comprehension of the text.

The Doll
The Doll
In Social Studies the students learned about diversity and how there are many different ethnic groups and languages spoken in Alberta. We also discussed immigration and that some people arrive in Alberta as refugees who have been forced to leave their home countries due to danger such as war or natural disasters. The students really enjoyed listening to a book called “The Doll” written by Dr. Tran-Davies, a local doctor and Vietnamese refugee. It tells the touching story of how the gift of a doll changes one little girl’s life in Canada.

POP Art!
POP Art!
This week, we worked on an Onomatopoeia Pop Art project! We started by learning about pop artist Roy Lichtenstein and his bright paintings in comic strip cartoons. We brainstormed a list of onomatopoeia words that we could use for our pop art such as POP, WHACK, POW, ZAP and BOOM! The students then learned how to make block letters with their word and added a speech bubble design around it. Using a sharpie, they outlined their art and filled in their design with the primary colours. For their background, they used a BINGO marker to create dots and then glued on their onomatopoeia word art.
