Straw Cut and String

Materials Needed:

  • straws

  • flat lacing string or

  • scissors

Directions:

  • cut straws into inch-long pieces using proper scissor grasp

  • push the lace through with the right hand, sliding the fingers back along the lace as you go

  • continue pushing along until the bead comes to the end of the lace

  • then pick up the beginning of the lace and repeat

  • make a bracelet by knotting the two ends together once completely strung

Goals:

  • shift/in-hand manipulation

  • separation of the two sides of the hand

Modifications:

  • make sure the pinky and ring finger are curled up and stabilized in the palm

  • arms placed on table gives more stability, making the task easier

  • arms hanging in space gives less stability, making the task harder
