Pen Top Printing

Materials Needed:

  • cap to a uniball pen or any other flat top cap, 1/4" to 1/2" in diameter

  • clay or theraputty

  • table top easel

  • toothpick

  • shapes to trace

Directions:

  • flatten the clay onto the tabletop easel

  • with a toothpick, draw a shape, letter, or path on the clay

  • hold the pen cap in a tripod grasp

  • pres the open end of the cap into the clay and pull it out

  • this will leave a circle print

  • using only your thumb, pointer, and middle fingers, turn the cap over

  • make a print with the flat end of the cap, next to the circle just printed

  • repeat this alternating pattern around the whole shape

Modifications:

  • push the pen cap hard into the c lay to cut out a hold for every impression

  • make pictures fit a science or math lesson (worm path, eel track, somple addition problems, etc.)
