I was very pleased with both my in-person and online student evaluations. Returning to the classroom during the pandemic has been challenging. I completely changed many of my activities to adhere to the safety protocols and many teaching strategies that have worked in the past have not been ideal. I have been reflecting, monitoring, and adjusting daily, but I don't feel as though I have worked out all of the kinks. These evaluations were reassuring. Even though I want to improve, my students had a good learning experience in my class and found my efforts beneficial.
Many of my students mentioned feeling supported and welcomed and commented on my communication and organization. I am very happy about this feedback because it is important to me that my students know how much I care and understand that I want to help them succeed. One student said, "Never failed to make me feel like a top priority. Cared about her students and does her job better than anyone I have EVER studied under. Always had good feedback and never failed to make me feel important." Another student said, "After 5 years of college I found another rare favorite. Hopson was very passionate, excited, hands-on, approachable, and understanding. I've only had one other instructor in my college career that carried the same attitude everyday no matter the topic that we are discussing in the course. Lastly she responds very quickly and follows up on students to make sure they are doing well in case other things are occurring in their lives as well."
One of my online students said, "Professor Hopson was fantastic! She created a warm environment which is difficult to find in an online class. She is truly a sweetheart that wants her students to succeed! I appreciated the frequent check ins and messages of encouragement on canvas. It helped me feel that I was not alone, because oftentimes in an online class it can feel isolating." I am so pleased that I was able to make a connection with this student in an online classroom environment. I strive to build connections with my online students and make sure they understand that they are not alone.
One of my hybrid students said, "Great experience. Profession Hopson is great at forcing a class to be engaged but not in a dreadful way and her excitement and enthusiasm for the subjects made the class even more enjoyable and intriguing." I take this comment as a great compliment because student engagement is a goal area for me. I have been implementing new strategies and trying new things in an attempt to promote student engagement and provide meaningful learning activities. I am pleased that this student enjoyed the activities and opportunities for engagement.
A few students stated that they would like the course to be full semester instead of 8 weeks and/or meet more frequently. This feedback demonstrates the importance of offering each class in a variety of formats to accommodate students with various preferences and learning needs. I will keep the importance of variety in mind when I provide input on the schedule.
