On March 1st, 2021, Dr. Lisa Lewis evaluated my online EXS101 class.
She shared positive feedback about the organization, clear expectations, variety of instructional materials, quality feedback, and the attention I give my students. She said, "Erika has an amazing way of greeting students and providing feedback. They will always feel she gives them 100% of her attention when reviewing the assignments and her responses are personalized to each student." I am very pleased with this feedback because I believe it is important for me to demonstrate that I am actively engaged online and to make my online students feel welcome. I want my students to understand that I am present and dedicated even though they do not see me in person.
It is a challenge for me to create videos, so I was pleased the Dr. Lewis acknowledged the videos in my course. She said, "Erika’s videos are always positive and energetic. Even the way her lessons are crafted you can tell that she is ‘speaking’ to the students in a pleasant, positive tone and is always extremely supportive. She encourages student to reach out to her any time they might have a question or concern. She gets great discussion posts and seems to have a gift in getting students to open up." My goal is to make my students feel comfortable asking questions and to reassure them that I want them to be successful, so I am pleased that Dr. Lewis felt that my online classroom was welcoming and that my students were supported. She said, "Weekly discussions have been developed that require both critical thinking and personal reflection on what students are learning. Erika responds to each discussion/email in a prompt and positive tone. She encourages students to treat each other with respect and encourages them to ask questions. It is clear that students feel comfortable in her online classroom." I believe it is important to develop a classroom environment where students treat each other with respect and feel comfortable sharing their ideas, so I am pleased that Dr. Lewis recognized these traits in my classroom.
When I met with Dr. Lewis, she asked some excellent questions about the resources I included in my online lessons. She noticed that all of the resources I shared regarding Behavior Change Theories were from the American Council of Exercise. Her observation encouraged me to reflect on that module. We work closely with several organizations, so I try to use a variety of resources from each organization. I will be revamping that module to include additional resources from the other organizations to keep my lessons well rounded and to accurately capture information from all of the organizations that we work with.
Dr. Lewis also stopped by my hybrid HES100 class and mentioned the activity we were doing in her final comments. She said, "I also had an opportunity to “pop” into your hybrid HES100 course briefly and always love seeing the small group activities that the students are participating in. That day was label reading and the students were all engaged and focused on the task at hand. You always do a great job of making assignments meaningful and practical! Keep up the great work. The students love you and we love having you in our department! Each year you continue to grow and improve as an instructor and a contributing member of the department. We are so very lucky to have you! " I am truly grateful for this opportunity and for all of the support I have received from Dr. Lewis and my entire department. I could not ask for a better team to work with. I want to continue learning and improving so I can provide my students with meaningful learning experiences and so I can be a valuable asset to my department.
