The PLAN
My IDP for this year will entail the following work/goals:
Professional Growth
* Attend an industry specific professional development opportunity
* Attend a teaching specific professional development opportunity
Service
* Get involved in department activities
* Enhance our relationships and partnerships with neighboring school districts
Instruction
* Find effective strategies for engaging college students both in-person and online
* Work with online instructors to enhance online instruction throughout the department
Professional Growth
I met both professional growth goals, but I would love to learn more. To meet my industry specific professional growth goal, I attended 24 hours worth of virtual conference sessions hosted by the American College of Sports Medicine and sat in on Dr. Lisa Lewis's EXS217 class. I would like to attend an in-person conference in the near future.
I really enjoyed and benefited from the teaching specific professional development opportunities offered by the CTLE. I attended Thrive, the Heart of Teaching, Positive Psychology, How to Use PearDeck to boost engagement, Mirroring 360, Helping Students: Motivating and Mentoring, and the Canvas Wishlist.
Service
I had the opportunity get involved in my department by participating on two interview committees, organizing field trips, leading tours, maintaining our department's website, helping with the class schedule, serving on the Health and Wellness Coaching Design and Development Team, organizing NAU information sessions, participating on advisory committees, managing the Canvas Blueprints, and serving as the eCourse coordinator.
I enhanced our relationships with neighboring school districts by participating on their advisory councils, offering tours, and planning field trips for their students.
I would like to maintain similar service goals in the future. Getting involved in the department's activities helps me connect with future and current students, build relationships with colleagues, and remain current on the programs we are offering.
Instruction
I have implemented new strategies for engaging students, but I would love to learn more and continue working on this goal next year.
In-person, I started using PearDeck to make my lessons more interactive and providing additional examples to clarify expectations for my students. To continue using engaging in-class activities, stations, models, rotations, and group work while following COVID guidelines, I started sanitizing supplies between uses, creating additional stations to promote social distancing, and doing walking discussions outside.
To promote engagement in my online classes, I showcased student work, provided students with additional choices, incorporated Packback discussions, and created opportunities for student-student collaboration. I added a group project in which students collaborate to create a deliverable that they present to their class in a discussion forum.
Throughout the year, I had the opportunity to work with online instructors and provide support to my department as a whole. I have been sharing the weekly emails from the eCourse committee which has helped me provide useful tips and open up the lines of communication. I reach out to all adjunct online instructors regularly to offer support, and I will be meeting with each online adjunct instructor to provide specific ideas and feedback. I met individually with OYO faculty Paige Moore, Jon Carioto, and Natalie Dominguez to answer their questions and help them with their courses in Canvas. I assist our Department's Assessment Coordinator, Stephanie Sawyer, with the Canvas aspects of implementing our department's assessment. Once I master Christina Clark's trick for embedding interactive review slides in Canvas, I plan on teaching that skill to my department so their students can also benefit. I would like to continue working on this goal next year, and I hope to be able to provide our department and online adjunct instructors with all of the support they need.
