During our department's advisement day on 9/25/18, I volunteered to run the welcome table. I welcomed students, passed out healthy snacks, provided literature, answered questions, and encouraged students to participate in a game to win prizes. Talking with students while they were waiting to meet with the advisor was really interesting and enjoyable. I had the opportunity to learn about their goals, ideas, and aspirations.
EXS101 includes competencies on academic and career planning. The more I understand about the goals of my students, the better equipped I will be to plan meaningful lessons that relate to their interests. After advisement day, I learned that the majority of my EXS101 students were unfamiliar with all of the advising services we offer on campus and/or unaware how to utilize the online resources. They did not know how to declare a major and many were unsure about the programs, degrees, and certificates we offer. I reached out to Harry Singh, one of the advisors who participated in our advisement day, to collaborate. We met and prepared a mini-lesson and demonstration to help my students. My students really appreciated having Harry Singh's insight and support. We received a lot of positive feedback including a student who told me that we reduced his stress level tremendously. In the future, I plan on collaborating with advisement and personally providing advisement support to my students to reduce their stress levels and ensure that they are on the correct path.
