On March 21st and March 22nd, I helped with the 5th Annual Health Fair. Louise So organized and ran the event, so my primary role was being present and helping her whenever needed. The event was fun and successful. I really enjoyed meeting the various vendors and interacting with my students outside of the classroom. I watched Team Brandon's organization present and it touched my heart. The head of the organization's son made a choice to drive drunk when he was 21 causing an accident that killed his best friend, created conflict in his family, and left him paralyzed and brain damaged. I found her first hand account of all of these consequences really meaningful. I talked to her after her presentation and she shared resources with me that I have added to my unit on Alcohol in Healthful Living. I want my students to understand how much one bad choice can impact them and the people they love. I also learned the basics of packing a wound which inspired me to learn more about "Stopping the Bleed" in emergency situations.
I learned a lot from observing the organizational strategies Louise used to prepare for the event and watching her interact with all of the vendors, volunteers, and sponsors. I was impressed that even when she was in the middle of a time bound task, she took the time to graciously greet and speak to everybody. I admire this about Louise and I would definitely like to incorporate this more. I have found that when I am in a rush or in the process of completing something, I get very task oriented. While completing tasks is necessary, Louise helped me recognize that people are more important and that I can put a task on hold.
