On January 7th, I volunteered to represent my department with Lisa Lewis at the new student orientation for our Field of Interest. The event was small, but had the opportunity to sit down with a handful of students who are interested in our program. I really enjoyed meeting the students face to face, and I believe they benefited from meeting us. They all seemed more relaxed and at ease after we discussed their Spring schedule, told them about the program, and invited them to ask questions. I would love to see more orientations like this in the future. Lisa and I discussed additional ways to welcome our students, including hosting an open house for prospective students and/or a semester kick off party for all of the incoming students.
I believe that making connections and building relationships is essential, so taking the time to welcome our students and to let them know we are here to support them will benefit our students and increase the success of our program.
