On 10/25, we hosted 90 eighth grade students from Marshall Ranch Elementary School. In small groups, the students participated in seven rotations including two nutrition labs, an equipment demonstration in the Sports Performance Lab, activities in the movement lab, a BOSU demonstration, a TRX demonstration, and outdoor activities led by the Exercise Science and Nutrition Club. Prior to the event, I met with the teachers at Marshall Ranch to see what they were looking for, presented the ideas to my department, reached out to the nutrition department to get them involved, recruited volunteers, reserved rooms, created a schedule, and secured supplies.
Overall, the day was a huge success. The students had a great time, the volunteers did an excellent job, and we received good feedback. The only snag we ran into was that some of the groups got confused during the rotation and went to the wrong place. I made a schedule based on room and instructor availability to help me plan and staff the rotations for the five groups. I gave a copy of this schedule to the groups so they knew where to go, but the schedule was too confusing. In the future, I will rewrite the schedule for each group and include only their rotations so it is not too confusing.
