On February 22nd, we hosted a field trip for Phoenix Union High School District. To prepare for the field trip, Derek and I created an agenda, communicated with fellow faculty members, recruited student volunteers, included the nutrition department, incorporated student government, created literature, and collected prizes. We planned rotating stations with a nutrition demo, multiple lab demonstrations, and power assessments for the morning, lunch in the cafe, and a tour and question and answer session in the afternoon. Our goal was to showcase our lab and inform students about the opportunities at GCC in a fun and meaningful way.
We planned everything for 40 students, but on the Tuesday before the field trip, we were informed that only 17 could come. We quickly revised the schedule to optimize the time and our volunteers. Due to an unfortunate tragedy the morning of the event, only 6 student were able to come. We quickly modified the schedule to provide those 6 students with a quality experience. I was really pleased with how well everybody adjusted to the modified plan and I felt as though the students had a great time. While the last minute change was out of our control and everybody was understanding, I felt bad for all of the volunteers who came that did not end up needing to do the task they had signed up for. In the future, I would love to plan a huge event for multiple schools and districts so we can maximize our outreach efforts. Rather than planning multiple little field trips, planning a big event could magnify the results using the same number of volunteers and time.
