I attended the assessment workshop lead by Meghan Kennedy on 9/13/18 because I wanted to learn how course outcomes, objectives, and competencies relate. With my experience in curriculum design at the high school level, we dealt with standards and objectives, so I wanted to learn more about the terminology and approach used at Glendale Community College. The workshop was very beneficial. I learned that learning can be emotional, cognitive, and/or motor based. It was interesting applying the verbs including in Bloom's taxonomy to the outcomes in my class and determining if I was assessing at the same level. Valid assessments measure the intended learning outcome so the verb included in the outcome should be measured by the assessment. If my outcome stated that the students will apply, the assessment should be an application. If my outcome stated that the students will demonstrate, the assessment should be a demonstration. I have been applying what I learned in this workshop to my planning and teaching by evaluating the alignment of my outcomes and assessments.
The information we learned in this workshop inspired the Fitness and Wellness department to think about how learning objectives are measured in our activity courses which fall under the Psychomotor domain. I did some research and found a model comparable to Bloom's that defines different levels of mastery in regards to motor development. Lisa Lewis and I shared this information with our department team to use as a tool when developing our department's common assessments.
