In the Fall, I volunteered to help with an Early Outreach event that my department was asked to participate in on Saturday 2/16/19. I did not hear anything else about it, so I asked my department leaders if it was still happening. They followed up and found that I was supposed to represent the department, but they were not given any details. Louise So and I gathered resources to hand out and developed a PowerPoint, but we were not sure what to expect. I imagined that I would be at a table passing out literature and/or have a brief opportunity to speak along with other department representatives. When I arrived on Saturday, I discovered that I had the floor for a full hour. I ended up presenting the Power Point, answering questions, and taking the students on a tour. The students seemed happy with what we did, but I would have planned differently if I would have known that I had that much time. I definitely learned to ask more questions when I agree to be part of an event, so I understand exactly what is expected of me and I can plan accordingly.
