I reached out to my former colleagues at Deer Valley Unified School District to develop a partnership. Currently, the DVUSD online physical education students complete fitness testing on their own and report their results. To enhance the accuracy of their assessments and provide our students and interns with practice completing assessments, we invited all of the DVUSD online physical education students to our campus for pre and post testing.
I learned a lot during the planning phase. We had to recruit students, reserve space, communicate with Deer Valley teachers, and get activity waivers approved by administration. We asked the Deer Valley students to RSVP on a Google Form so we could plan effectively and we were excited about the interest.
For the pretesting, we had 89 students. We did not anticipate all of the parents and families staying so there were more overall people than anticipated. With only 6 student helpers and all of the activities in the same building, the space was crowded and we ended up with some long lines.
To make the post-testing more efficient, we recruited additional student helpers, spread out into another building, and made signs to help direct traffic. The post testing ran smoothly.
Using the strategies we found successful, we also hosted pre and post testing in the Fall and Spring. We have also discussed additional opportunities for collaboration including offering DVUSD students guest passes to use our facilities and guest speaking in their classes to discuss career opportunities in Exercise Science.
This partnership is helpful to our program because we are building awareness about what we have to offer and our Exercise Science students have the opportunity to practice their communication and assessment skills.
